Lebanon to propose Hezbollah disarmament plan on August 31, Israel to give counterproposal

Ramping up the pressure on Lebanon. The US delegation said it was expecting the Lebanese government to produce a plan at the end of the month for how to disarm Hezbollah. Your government is coming back with a proposal August 31st. They’re not talking about going to war. They’re talking about how do we convince Hezbollah to give up those arms. Now it’s not about words. Now it’s about action. The plan is part of Lebanon and Israel’s ceasefire deal mediated by the United States last November, which ended two months of open warfare between Israel and Hezbollah. In early August, the Lebanese government tasked the army with establishing a state monopoly on weapons by the end of the year, but it faces an uphill battle to convince the Iranbacked Shia movement without reigniting its civil war. In a televised speech, Hezbollah’s leader reiterated how committed the group remained to its military arsenal. This government decision does not have national consensus. Hezbollah is making any discussion of disarmament conditional on the Jewish state withdrawing from its five positions in Lebanon, a schedule that clashes with Israel’s, which signaled it would reduce its presence in Lebanon after the Lebanese army acted to disarm Hezbollah.
