Seems like the 2 of them get 5 years and the female driver get 120 days…

  1. We don’t have very long prison sentences, in general. We also have one of the lowest reimprisonment rates. It’s not just five years in a cage.

  2. A prison sentence in Scandinavia is not a deterrent to most immigrants. It is a 5-year all-inclusive holiday for them considering how their living standards were in their home country before they fled.

I don’t know about the data on the effect of rehabilitation, like the number of repeat offenders or how many convicts are involved in another crime after being released.

  3. American here. Why wouldn’t they just be deported? Would save on resources and i would assume general public opinion would support that.

  4. Yes it is low. Here’s something to think about: Let’s say you could double their prison sentences if you wanted to. However, doing so means they are destined to do the same crime as soon as their sentence are over. If you don’t double it, they will not commit this crime again and become more functional members of society. Would you still double their sentence?

The thing is, our prison system works. Focusing on forgiving sentences and rehabilitation results in the lowest recidivism in the world and the lowest lifetime cost of criminals in the world.

Is adequate punishment more important to you than saving their future victims from harm?

I’m not calling you immortal or anything, I am just giving you the perspective here. Rehabilitation will always result in less crime and less expenses in the long run, even if it may not seem fair in the individual cases.

  5. I think that five years is a fair sentence. They didn’t blow up a house, their explosion blew in the front door and none of the six people inside were injured. As such, they weren’t accused of attempted murder, but for the lesser offence of causing an explosion that could have endangered life. That seems correct, as it looks like the bomb was intended to scare the occupants, but of course the explosion could have killed or injured someone.

Five years is probably enough of a deterrent to dissuade people from doing something similar.

  6. Why did you put Swedes in quotation marks like that?

  7. 5 years not being able to travel outside Norway is inhumane!!
