An AI simulation of a Mount Fuji eruption is being used to prepare Tokyo for the worst • FRANCE 24
This is an AI generated disaster simulation video made by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It’s to warn that if Mount Fuji 100 km away, erupted, there would be transport chaos, food and power supply disruption, and respiratory problems in Tokyo. Two people in the Japanese capital watching the video took it in their stride. Nature’s power is so great that maybe it’s better if it scares us a little bit. It’s not like people around me are panicking. Unless there’s there’s hard data like there’s actually some volcanic activity or earthquakes happening a lot then then I would uh pay attention to what’s happening there. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says that indeed there are currently no signs of Fuji erupting. The last eruption was in 1707. The message now is to say in a worst case scenario that ash could reach the capital in one to two hours. Rather than focusing on a Mount Fuji eruption itself, the video mainly depicts what the situation would be like in the event of widespread volcanic ash fallout. I believe regardless of where an eruption occurs, the general conditions would be similar. I think the video draws from past cases of ash related disaster situations as reference and in that sense I don’t think there’s anything strange about it. Release of the video now is part and parcel of Japan’s meticulous disaster planning which involves dealing with the threat of earthquakes, typhoons, floods, and mudslides. The country is on what’s called the ring of fire around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, known for volcanic eruptions and frequent quakes.
Mount Fuji hasn’t erupted since 1707. But for Volcanic Disaster Preparedness Day, Japanese officials have released computer- and AI-generated videos showing a simulation of a potential violent eruption of the active volcano.
