“Budapest was an outstanding low performance for us. We tried many things that weekend, but not many things seemed to have worked.”
Red Bull understand Hungary was a one-off
According to the Frenchman, it was not something to do with a fundamental issue with the car, the reason why their outing at the Hungaroring went awry.
“The key question then was, ‘is Budapest a one-off – or is it an even bigger worry?’ And I think we now understand that it’s probably something that is very much linked with what we have done at the track there.”
McLaren, however, as what can be seen from the free practice session results, are well beyond Red Bull’s and Max Verstappen’s reach. Nevertheless a good result could be attained at the Dutchman’s home race.
“Here, Zandvoort, similar track characteristics to Budapest, and even though we are nowhere near fastest enough to compete with the McLarens, we are back in the game in being in that group behind them,” Mekies concluded.
