NORTHWEST ARKANSAS CHAPTER OF THE MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

Currently serving, retired and former military officers (commissioned and warrant officers) are invited to the next lunch of the Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). The lunch will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 2 at Mess Hall 45, located at 1830 N. Crossover Road, Suite 2 in Fayetteville.

The purpose of the lunch is fellowship, camaraderie and to share career experiences. It’s also an opportunity for prospective members to get to know current chapter members and learn about the chapter.

The chapter, comprised of 175 members, is involved in numerous community service projects in Northwest Arkansas. These include a U.S. flag education program for all local elementary schools, ROTC mentorship with Army and Air Force ROTC cadets at the University of Arkansas, support to Navy Junior ROTC at Bentonville High Schools, a robust scholarship program for veterans and family members at the University of Arkansas, expansion of the Fayetteville National Cemetery, sponsoring participants at Boys State and Girls State programs and membership in the NWA Veterans Coalition.

MOAA and its more than 360,000 members advocate with Congress, Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Department of Homeland Security and other departments to preserve and protect earned benefits for our uniformed services, veterans, their families and surviving spouses. The chapter actively supports MOAA’s legislative initiatives.

ANDANTE MUSIC CLUB

Andante Music Club of Bella Vista will launch its program year with a “New Beginning” luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista, located at 20 Boyce Drive.

A music program will follow the luncheon at 2 p.m. “Reminiscence,” will feature Rebecca Harrold, pianist, vocalist, composer and collaborative musician, and Charles Berg, piano artist specializing in classical, jazz, popular and original works.

Harrold will perform “I Remember” by Stephen Sondheim, her arrangements of classical music and a few of her original works. Berg will play a Chopin prelude, Debussy arabesque and a couple of his own jazz arrangements of classic tunes.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Harrold spent many years as a pianist and singer with the Playhouse Square Foundation, where she helped stage innovative multimedia performances. Following a 20-year tenure as principal pianist for Boston Ballet and staff positions at Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory Dance, she relocated to Bentonville.

Harrold’s artistry spans classical, jazz, blues, rock, soul and new age. Beyond performance, she has served as music director for children’s theater and school programs and continues to coach and accompany young pianists in composition and ballet accompaniment.

She plays the piano and sings at the Bella Vista Community Church. Her newest project is producing Music City Tours to support local talent in cities nationwide.

Berg is a piano artist who specializes in classical, jazz, popular and original works. Classically trained from a young age at the Alpha Walker Music Studio in Los Angeles, he excelled in the Certificate of Merit and Royal Conservatory of Music programs. He received medals in several piano competitions.

Following his competitive piano career, he studied with Wojciech Kocyan at Loyola Marymount University and completed his bachelor’s degree in both music (piano performance) and mathematics. Berg continues to expand his repertoire and style, and now performs all genres, teaches privately and manages the NWA Steinway Gallery.

The music program is free and open to the public.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS

The League of Women Voters of Washington County (LWVWC) continues its Drinks and Dialogue gatherings in September. This event will take place at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3, at Crisis Brewing, located at 210 S. Nelson Hackett Blvd. in Fayetteville.

The guest speaker will be Jennifer Waymack Standerfer, an attorney with Waymack Standerfer Law, who is committed to civic engagement at the local level.

Waymack Standerfer, of Bentonville, holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Arkansas School of Law. She has been practicing for more than 20 years and has a demonstrated history of working in government affairs and administration. While she has represented clients throughout the state in all areas of the law, her expertise lies in elections, local government, criminal justice, legislative drafting and ballot measures.

This event is open to the public and admission is free.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to encouraging informed and active participation in government. The group does not endorse any candidates or political parties.

CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE

The Bella Vista Civil War Round Table will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel, located at 504 Memorial Drive in Bella Vista.

Charles Alison of Fayetteville, who will present a program detailing the “Second Siege of Fayetteville” in 1864.

Alison is a graduate of the University of Arkansas where he is now employed as an editor. He has served as a board member of the Washington County Historical Society and is active in historic preservation.

The public is invited to the meeting. There is no charge for attendance but donations are gratefully accepted to defray the cost of the speakers. For more information email [email protected]

The Bella Vista Civil War Round Table meets on the first Thursday of each month, featuring locally and nationally recognized speakers. The group also plans field trips to significant Civil War sites. Meetings are open to the public free of charge but donations are greatly appreciated to help defray speaker costs.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS AQUARIUM SOCIETY

The Northwest Arkansas Aquarium Society will hold a fundraising auction on Sept. 13 at Millwood Christian Church, 3450 W. Pleasant Grove Road in Rogers. Seller registration will begin at 10 a.m. and bidding will begin at noon.

ORCHID SOCIETY OF THE OZARKS

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will hold their annual orchid auction Sept. 21 at Northwest Technical Institute, located at 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The auction preview will begin at noon and the sale will begin at 1 p.m.

The auction offers affordable plants and accessories for all levels of growers.

The nonprofit organization’s objective is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Annual membership is $10. Meetings include showcasing members’ best blooming plants, presentations, snacks and door prizes.
