The early stages of opening a business are filled with potential roadblocks for entrepreneurs in any industry. Location acquisition or construction costs, mixed with material and labor costs will test the business plan of any startup.
And while hard work and sacrifice can give way to consistent business, satisfied customers and a successful growing business, it can also lead to new issues and problems such as human resource compliance, unemployment insurance claims and payroll services.
Your People Professionals recently celebrated 40 years in the Santa Maria Valley, handling the time consuming tasks associated with employee matters so business owners can focus on the more productive and profitable areas of their business.
“We built a professional HR team so our clients don’t have to,” said owner Sandra Dickerson. “They didn’t go into business to have to focus on all of the employment laws that they have to deal with to have employees. So, by using our HR Outsourcing Services, we take care of that.”
Dickerson and her former partner purchased the business from the original founder in 1997, and grew towards their current mission of offering bespoke and boutique HR services to local businesses.
“We wanted to know our clients, and we very much have kept that focus of this business over the years,” Dickerson said. “I have lots of clients who work with my team, but they know that they can always call me if they have a particular question, or they just want to brainstorm issues about their business.”
After her partner retired a little more than 6 years ago, Dickerson said YPP has seen a change in focus; with the HR business growing in both revenue, and client base.
That client growth has led to increased staffing, with YPP now boasting a staff of 28, including some qualified remote employees that help grow the company’s services productively and effectively — a positive impact from the work restrictions caused by the COVID pandemic.
From local small businesses to large government contractors, Your People Professionals has decades of providing results to satisfied clients with payroll infrastructure, basic wage and employment law and workers compensation issues.
Dickerson has a long history on various Santa Maria Valley boards including the Santa Barbara County Workforce Development board, the Santa Maria Chamber board and EconAlliance. She is currently the president of the Santa Maria Philharmonic, noting the importance of having cultural opportunities locally — not just for businesses but for their employees and the community overall.
After first acquiring the business and spending a lot of initial years working in the HR outsourcing industry at both the state and national level, Dickerson wanted to help foster economic growth in Santa Maria and on the Central Coast.
Dickerson said that in her role as the CEO she doesn’t get to work with clients day-to-day, and current successes, potential growth, or trusted word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied clients are due to the work of the worksite employees.
“It’s my team, they’re all incredibly talented,” Dickerson said. “We spent a lot of time on training and development, so they have a really high level of skill.”
