We could all have had fucking free houses for years at this rate
Again, I know we have to help the ukrainians and if this is what it costs, it’s what it costs. But I have watched nearly every single friend I had from college emigrate over the last few years because they couldn’t afford housing. All of my friends are being hammered with rent, or living at home into their 30s with serious mental health and personal development consequences. This is not fair. They could have fixed this whenever they wanted.
Where’s their talk of “magic money trees” now?
I’m completely in favour of helping out Ukranians, but it just goes to show the absolute hypocrisy of the government, and how they could have helped at any point, but chose not to.
I absolutely hate this support our own first narrative that comes out from the right wing about supporting our own etc…. This will drive people towards those movements.
The thing about this situation is these steps should have been taken years ago as we have a major crisis here. All these social units could have been given out to working families in need, freeing up private units that where rented through hap, therefore lowering the prices. We have lost thousands of young skilled workers because they could not afford a place to live.
I will welcome all Ukrainians here with open arms, it’s the right thing to do and I commend our government for doing it. These steps should have been taken previous to this to solve our housing crisis.
The government seem to be bending backwards to helping Ukrainians now and glossing over severe housing issues at home but what do they get to gain from spending €3 billion?
Don’t get me wrong, what has happened is horrific but there comes a point where we need to fix our own issues first before taking on others
Enjoy paying those taxes to feel good lads.
We should be under no obligations to put Ukrainians above the Irish.
We can’t even buy our own houses and yet we will bump these poor folks ahead of our own tax payers?
Thats fucked.
It’ll cost a lot more when there is a human rights investigation into how our landlord class is preparing to exploit, degrade and enslave these new refugees for profit.
Would be cheaper to send all the weapons we have so they can kick Russians out
Might be a bit dramatic but I could see this being a catalyst for the rise of the far right in Ireland.
Why is the government only now deciding to really fundamentally tackle the housing crisis when Ursula Von der Lyon says you need to take this many refugees and you better find somewhere to put them? For so long Irish citizens were told we can’t do that it’s too expensive/not practical/not constitutional
For the record I am very pro accepting refugees and don’t believe there should be a cap on it but the sudden urgency to tackle the housing crisis for them is very jarring compared to the reaction from gov when Irish people asked the last 7 years
Option not available for people in hotels who have been screaming for years over homeless issue OR for Syrian refugees.
This is great and all but I’m shitting it for my partner and her friends. They are all due to apply naturalisation in 3 years a couple of weeks before Ukrainian refugees can. I’m glad that they can but but knowing how incompetent gocernment.I don’t know how long it will really take them to give them their citizenship, because from what I read there is already a a 12-24 months waiting time to get naturalisation. Knowing all the gnib card delays and extensions blah blah.
I wonder how if feels sitting in a direct provision center watching this after years of being told they had no housing for you, must suck being the wrong kind of refugee.
we need to rid of these politicians
Can we not do a vote and see what the people think, it’s their tax money after all. Im all for helping but this is a slap in the face after all these years of hearing there’s no money to help the Irish people.
You could build a children’s hospital for that kind of money.
Jokes aside I don’t think that Irish people would be ok with being housed in old convents as an alternative to the housing crisis. That or taking in people in their 20s and 30s, who can’t afford to rent or buy, into our family homes sans rent. There would be uproar. It’s not a black and white situation where the government have suddenly developed the ability to wave a magic wand and fix the housing crisis.
I’m in the same boat as everyone in their 20s/30s in Ireland. It’s god awful. But we really need to stop fixating on Ukrainian refugees like this. They are fleeing a war zone. They are fleeing rape and murder. Their families, particularly the men, are likely still at risk back home.
This is not a them versus us equation. I hope to god that we never have to walk a mile in their shoes.
The Ukraine refugee crisis is nothing to blame or scapegoat here because this really just drives home the complete lack of willpower and non-existent fucks from FF/FG.
What did we borrow in 2010 , 64 – 85 billion between the EU and IMF ? We’ve paid around 60 billion in interest on debt alone since 2009 before covid even hit , when I last checked. This government could ultimately resolve our housing crisis but they simply choose not to.
When a higher international power gives them a financial obligation, they’ll tow the line. When their citizens beg them for the same it’s a shrug of the shoulders with empty pockets hanging out. Hope they get rinsed by the opposition in the next dail sitting.
And I’d pay €3bn more. Fuck all the people who think we shouldn’t. Have a problem with the government? TAke it out in them!
Could have built circa 10,000 publically owned houses if costed at e300,000 ( Obviously outside Dublin). Would have taken the pressure off those in renting. Government has no interest in solving the housing crisis, we should be livid. I feel sorry for those renting and working, they’re being hammered.

Always implying “couldn’t this be spent better? Can we afford this?” When it’s literally never spent in a better way and no one has the public’s best interest at heart
Let’s not fear monger more xenophobia please, it’s a country being attacked, an actual need for money if there ever was one
We’re already hurting with fuel, next will be prices hikes on products that usually source UA grain. This could go on for years yet, & even stopping tomorrow would be lucky to sort things out by xmas.
We’re always moaning about the rain here, but at least it’s not raining shells & missiles.
We wouldn’t be Irish without a good moan & let’s keep it up.
It’s a price we’ll pay for putting VP back in his box, the alternative would be hell.
This is an honsest question.
How many Afghanistans did we take in / what did we do when the taliban seized control?
This question might be upsetting to some but i cant help think of this when i read about how much we are doing for Ukraine.

It’s a double standard.
