Hello All,

The building is from 1970s. I am trying to drill just above the window and I have hit something hard immediately after 1.5 cm. Does any know what could be there which is preventing me to go further?

Is it "sturz", linter or Girder? Even if it is one of these (metal or concrete), I have tried to drill through with metal bit and masonry bits using hammer drill. I am just confused what am I left to left to try?

  1. I guess it’s a concrete ceiling. If so, it might be a bad idea to drill there. 🤷‍♂️
I would ask your landlord for more information.

  2. Always use a metal detector before drilling. Wires, pipes, girders, you need to know whats in the wall

  4. Probably you hit a steel rod of the lower reinforcement layer of the ceiling construction.

  5. It‘s probably rebar. Harmless. There are Youtube tutorials how to drill through rebar. You basically need the right machinery and take your time.

That is no typical location for a gas/water line. If it was electric wiring, you‘d already be through. German residential housing in high rises is typically steel-reinforced concrete, not steel frame. Therefore girders are unlikely.

Maybe consider closing that hole again and drill a few centimeters diagonally from there.

  6. you used a Schlagbohrer, try a Schlaghammer instead (goes through walls like butter)

  7. Depends what drill you have. Mine wasn’t powerful enough to go through the concrete. When I got a proper boring drill it would go through

  8. Concrete or rebar. You may need a more powerful drill with hammer function

  9. I’ve had similar issues and I think it’s certain kinds of stone. My solution ended up being having to buy carbide tipped bits and even then it just took time and wrecked my shoulder.

  10. Well, did you first try with the hammer function on and full power, to press into it and see if you can drill? Are you using the drill bits on the far right of the picture?

  11. Stahl/Beton Drill with a machine that has SDS quick release connection. Look for “bosch expert sds plus” drills. You can use the drill on a regular machine but it will wobble a bit.

  12. It’s either rebar or concrete. If it’s the first one, bad luck. If the latter, get a glass of water to cool down the drill bit and go nuts with the hammer drill.

  13. Definitely rebar. Use a METAL dril bit to go through that.
Not that drilling through rebar would be advisable, tho

  14. Why is there no comment pointing out that that’s an area you just don’t touch?
You should have a sturz above a window.
    Windows are already weak points.
I’m baffled by all the advice on how to drill through that.

You dont touch near the windows. It can cause an expensive issue.
Why can’t you just go through the wall a good distance away from the window?

Edit: Is that a balcony outside there? Would make it an even worse idea to drill there through steel

  15. Green Bosch is a real toy. Bought one many years ago and gave it immediately back to the shop. I bought a Metabo which was a bit more expensive..

  16. Get yourself a good Bohrhammer. You have hit concrete and the drill is too weak/the wront tool. It should have a sds „connection“.
Either you rent one or buy one. If buying bosch you should know that the green tools for „home use“ are really not good especially for their price. If bosch then blue. Otherwise you could also have a look at brands like Ryobi or Makita which are really okay for the price

But for one hole just rent a tool or ask a neighbor

  17. I think it might be a rebar either go left or right you might be able to avoid the rebar. Also the equipent looks good, no problem there at all.
