  1. Hey, anti-vax conspiracists! Another victim of your disinformation and lies.

  2. Deadly disease kills when life saving medicine not used

  3. No one’s fault but the person who didn’t wanna vaccine.

  4. I had whooping cough as a kid, fucking brutal. Felt like I was dying, couldn’t breathe, and the noise ugh.

  5. I cannot imagine gambling with my infants life by opting out of a vaccine. I hate it when people spread disinformation and then argue that the disease in question barely exists anymore – yes, because we’re _vaccinating_!

  6. Awful. Poor family and baby.

This came up on the uk politics site and I do think it would be advantageous if there could a vaccination that all adults could access, not just for pregnant women within a limited time.

  7. I could sort of understand some apprehension when the new Covid vaccine was created. It was a race to produce it after all, although I still had every one that was offered.

The vaccines people are refusing now though are tried and tested and proven to be safe. It infuriates me that people are turning against science and research, and letting their children die as a consequence.

  8. Mother responsible for babies death..that’s a more a accurate headline.

  9. My cousin and her husband are anti vax and have cut themselves off from our family as a result. They are taking their unvaccinated kids to Vietnam and Cambodia next month on holiday. It’s a damn disgrace that they are allowed to do that with no repercussions, not even thinking about what can happen in the UK like this.

  10. My cousin is anti vax.

She says there is mercury in vaccines. There is.

However there is less mercury in vaccines than 2 fillets of salmon…

  11. My nephew was at a kids party recently, a few weeks later two of the children were diagnosed with whooping cough. He started coughing shortly after (despite the vaccination), but his parents took it very seriously and got him tested and then emergency antibiotics within a day. I’m so grateful to those doctors because it cleared his symptoms up not too long after.

The kids that were initially diagnosed still have it, their symptoms are now so severe that they’re vomiting from coughing. The parents believe that antibiotics are unnecessary because “it’s better for their immune system to fight it off themselves”

    It’s horrifying to watch.

Oh and yes, the parents of the initial kids are anti-vaxx.

  12. Horrific, that poor poor baby. As a new mum myself, I can never understand mothers who gamble with their babies’ lives like this.

  13. Unfortunately there will be more deaths like this and that stark fact won’t stop the anti-vax conspiracists

  14. So I’m not excusing it but when I was pregnant it was stupidly hard to get hold of mine. I was given the run around and kept getting directed elsewhere. Eventually ended up doing it the very last minute at a new GP I’d never been to before. Midwives and GPs kept telling me they had no idea who does it.

I’m 100% pro vaccine so kept pushing but I imagine someone less keen wouldn’t be so stubborn.

It was ridiculous because 2nd pregnancy they said “am I thinking about the vaccine?” I said yes and they went and grabbed it a minute later. I don’t know what the fuss was about 2 years before.

  15. In UK in 2012, 14 babies too young to be vaccinated themselves died of whooping cough

That is when the pregnancy booster was rolled out to give newborns some level of transferred maternal protection in the first weeks of life

That’s only 13 years ago, but it seems some people might have forgotten already that this disease really does cause harm and even death

  16. I went the see my doctor in 1989 for an ear infection. She looked thru my notes. The years 1973-1975 were missing (born in 73).

“I can’t tell if you have had all your boosters”, she said. She called the practice nurse who whipped out the needle and I was sorted there and then. No fuss. I wasn’t even asked, although being sensible, I would have said yes.

In order to protect children from the extreme political, religious or health views of parents, vaccination should be compulsory, or child benefits are stopped.

  17. But Facebook says it’s an unnecessary jab, they get a bonus for them taking it and injecting unborn babies. It’s an abortion jab….. big pharma, and we never had whooping cough until it was invented. We just got on with it

  18. Unfortunately people have to learn the hard way as to why accredited scientists should be listened to and not some fuckwit on social media!

  19. This is so sad. It could be that the mother was unable to have the vaccine, so I wouldn’t be too quick to judge. I was luckily able to have the whooping cough vaccine whilst pregnant but the nurse refused to give me the flu vaccine as I was too ill after having issues and illness during pregnancy.

  20. The amount of ant vaxxers I know that happily snort cocaine and take unregulated recreational pills is astounding.

The anti vax community really just speaks to how people distrust the world around them and how that’s derived from authorities connection with big business.

  21. Recommend anyone who can to get revaccinated as an adult. The vaccination doesn’t cover you for life, but it used to not present any real risk because *everyone* was vaccinated as a child, so the illness wasn’t circulating. Unfortunately, as more and more parents are opting out of vaccinations, it is now spreading again including in the adult population, so even those who are vaccinated are now at risk. My partner and I had it a few years back but neither of us recognised it for what it was until it had been a very long time. Neither of us had a clue we could even get it as adults seeing as we were vaccinated as children. It took us four months to feel relatively normal again, we were sick as dogs that whole time and both frequently thought we were going to choke to death in the night. It was horrendous.

  22. This is tragic. I was pregnant and gave birth late last year and i’d have been in the cohort this mother was in. Not only did I have to specifically ask my midwife for information about vaccines I was entitled to in pregnancy, she made comments to suggest they weren’t the best choice for pregnant women. (“You can ask your GP about it if you really want it” and “I’m not sure how you feel about vaccines, but you can look into it if you’re interested)

Luckily, I was educated enough to advocate for myself and my baby. Even a hint of doubt from your medical professional would be enough to make many women question vaccines. When I mentioned my experience to to others, there was a lot of sympathy for the midwife, comments like “maybe she just doesn’t agree with them, she’s entitled to her opinion” This is one of the issues we are up against.

I’ve since also met mums in baby classes, who would have seen the same community midwife, proudly stating they didn’t vaccinate. One mom told me she had been vaccinated but experienced side effects, so was looking into “vaccine reversal.””

Pregnant women and new mums are vulnerable. They have a fierce drive to protect their baby. introduction of doubt around vaccine safety in these groups can have dramatic consequences. We need to demand this is addressed with clear, factual information given by those providing primary care to these women.

  23. We don’t actually know if the mother refused the vaccine or if other factors were at play. I’m currently pregnant and finally managed to get the jab a couple of weeks back, but it was an absolute odyssey to get it.

At my booking appointment (first contact with the NHS/midwife regarding my pregnancy), I was told there were certain vaccines I should get. My partner was with me and he emphasised explicitly that we are pro vaccination. I said absolutely, give me everything. Got my notes back and under “vaccinations” the midwife had written “offered and undecided”. I flagged this as a concern during multiple subsequent appointments but to my knowledge, nothing was done about it. I was then asked at two subsequent appointments whether I’d had any vaccinations recently, but got conflicting information how to get it – they definitely couldn’t do them at the clinic, I should try via my GP or maybe try a pharmacy. I was eventually able to book an appointment with the nurse at my GP, but they could only do whooping cough, not flu or Covid. Assured me I shouldn’t worry because they weren’t in season anyway (but NHS Online says expecting mothers should get them so the baby is protected – any my baby is due in October, so definitely in season. I’ve since resolved to just pay for them at Boots when they become available (tbc if they accept my maternity exemption certificate).

I’ve since more or less accidentally found out about the RSV vaccine I should have been offered from about 28 weeks because it was mentioned on the “your baby week by week” guide on NHS online. No midwife I’ve ever seen has ever mentioned it to me, but apparently it’s very important I get it during pregnancy because babies can get very sick from the virus and can’t be vaccinated themselves until they’re several months old.

Pregnancy in the UK is an exhausting admin process in addition to being physically and mentally exhausting. I’m lucky that I have a supportive partner who reminds me of stuff my knackered baby brain isn’t on top of, but there’s a very good chance I’d forget a lot if he didn’t.

  24. Sending thoughts and prayers that should fix the situation

  25. Prosecute the mother for gross negligence resulting in the death of her child.

  26. I was 3 and a half when my baby sister got whooping cough, she’d just turned 1 year old. I can still remember her struggling to breathe, continually struggling for every single breath, tears running down her cheeks, coughing continuously. I’m 52 now and It has stayed with me. I’ve always been protective of her. Get your babies vaccinated, it’s horrific to witness, never mind the hell for the baby struggling for to survive.

  27. A look ahead to Reform run Britain.

The far right are doing away with vaccines in the USA, and Farage & co get all their policies ideas from there, so get used to this.
