That’s more than double the annual sunshine, a compelling statistic for those tired of Scotland’s grey skies.

But the appeal of Portugal goes far beyond the weather.

“We’ve seen a sharp uptick in enquiries from Scottish residents this year,” says Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK, which organises the Moving to Portugal events. “People are looking for a better quality of life, more flexible working options, and in some cases, a smart place to invest or retire.”

To meet this growing demand, the Chamber is bringing its flagship event, the Moving to Portugal Show, to Edinburgh for the first time later this year. It will take place at The Scotsman Hotel in central Edinburgh on 21st November 2025.

The event will give attendees the chance to speak directly with experts on Portugal’s residency visas, taxation, pensions, real estate, and healthcare—all tailored to the needs of UK citizens navigating the post-Brexit environment.

Portugal’s updated NHR 2.0 (Non-Habitual Resident) tax regime is also part of the draw. It offers highly qualified professionals, who become Portuguese tax residents, a flat 20% income tax rate on employment or self-employment income, for a non-renewable period of 10 consecutive years. Other income is taxed at standard Portuguese rates. While some of the rules have changed, the incentives for professionals remain strong.

“This isn’t just about retiring in the sun,” adds Hippisley. “We’re seeing professionals, families, and digital workers exploring Portugal as a long-term base — combining work, lifestyle, and opportunity.”

Attendees at the November event will learn how to make the move a reality — whether through property purchase, remote work relocation, or long-term investment.
