BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: 65 years of Goldie’s Trail Bar-B-Que – The Vicksburg Post

Goldie’s Trail Bar-B-Que, now located on South Frontage Road in Vicksburg, has been open for 65 years.

Cashier Phyllis Collins has been working at Goldie’s since February of 1994.

“I was just in the restaurant business and I needed another job, so I applied for it and they hired me,” she said.

Collins said she loves getting to greet the regulars and newcomers alike. Her favorite dish on the menu is the club sandwich.

Randy Wright Jr. is a manager at the establishment.

“It’s been in my family since 1960,” he said. “It started with my great uncle, and then my dad continued, and my dad passed away in 2019. So right now, my mom is the owner. Her name is Rhonda Wright.”

Wright Jr. said his favorite part of the job is getting to visit and meet with so many different people.

“Seeing friends and good customers. Over the years, just being able to come here and, you know, (to) have that camaraderie and just visit with people,” he said.

When asked what his favorite dish on the menu is, Wright Jr. said, “It’s Goldie’s barbecue, so it’s definitely the barbecue sauce that is our specialty. We probably sell more ribs than we do anything else, so I would say our ribs.”

Jars of Goldie’s famous barbecue sauce are available for purchase at the restaurant.

Sandra “Byrd” Turner has been working at Goldie’s for 46 years, starting in 1979. She is currently a prep cook, but she said she has “done it all.”

She was hired one year before Randy Wright Sr. began running the business.

“I miss him so much. He was a good man, you know?” she said. “And he believed in taking care of his employees… making sure everything was right. He always said, ‘You scratch my back, I scratch yours.’”

She said all the food at the restaurant is great, but her favorite dish is the fried catfish, which is served after 5 p.m. as well as on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

When asked what his secret was to retaining employees for so many years, Wright Jr. said, “We’ve got a great crew. We’ve got good people. They’ve been with us a long time. You know, we try to take care of them, they take care of us, and it’s been a really good relationship for a lot of years. (We’re) very fortunate to have a lot of good people working for us.”

Goldie’s Trail Bar-B-Que is open from Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. It is located at 2430 South Frontage Road.
