Speaking in the Senate while moving a motion for debate on social cohesion, Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi said the far right had been ’emboldened’ and was now ‘on the move’, saying racism has been ‘legitimised’ and ‘normalised’ by media and politicians. Faruqi said anti-immigration rallies over the weekend should be a ‘wake-up call’, and accused other politicians of having downplayed or fuelled racism. The senator also read out some of the abusive and violent letters that she said she receives weekly. ‘Migrants like me have been told repeatedly to put up, shut up or go back to where I come from,’ Faruqi said
