JD Vance floated a potential conspiracy theory following Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s joint engagement announcement on social media.
The couple sent shockwaves through both the sports and entertainment industries when they revealed on Instagram that they had progressed to the next stage of their romance. The post featured the Kansas City Chiefs sensation down on one knee, proposing to the stunned pop sensation.
With the globe’s biggest musical artist now engaged to a key player from the league’s most beloved franchise, Vance suspects the NFL might exploit this momentous occasion. This follows President Donald Trump’s inability to resist taking a subtle jab at Swift in his swift response to the news.
In an interview with USA Today, the vice president offered his congratulations to the pair while expressing concerns about a possible conspiracy unfolding this season. Vance specifically suggested that the Chiefs might be operating under different regulations than other teams across the league.
“I will say as a football fan − as a Cincinnati Bengals fan − I hope that the NFL does not put a thumb on the scale for the Kansas City Chiefs just because Travis Kelce is now getting married to maybe the most famous woman in the world,” Vance told the publication.
“You guys can’t sort of have this, I’m worried they’re going to have a Super Bowl wedding thing this season. Can’t do it. The Kansas City Chiefs have to follow the same rules as everybody else.”
He further stated: “So if we see the refs being particularly friendly to Kansas City Chiefs players, then I think all football fans should be willing to push back on the NFL and say, look, you guys got to be fair. Just because Travis is getting married to Taylor, you still can’t put your thumb on the scale for the Kansas City Chiefs.”
This isn’t the first time accusations of collusion between the league and the Chiefs have surfaced. However, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed these allegations prior to Super Bowl LIX, emphasizing that officials are not favoring Kansas City.
“I think from a lot of those theories are things that happen in social media and they get a new life,” he began in February 2025. “As you say, it’s not your theory, but it’s out there. Nobody wants it to be their theory, and so I understand that.
DON’T MISS:
“I think it reflects a lot of the fans’ passion, and I think it also is a reminder for us how important officiating is, and I think the men and women that officiate in the NFL are outstanding.
“They have the highest possible standards. That’s a ridiculous theory for anyone who might take it seriously, but at the end of the day, it’s something we always have to continue to work on.”
Goodell also pointed out that the Chiefs’ performance this season is a testament to the level of competition and the quality of officiating in the league.
“The Chiefs, with their 15 wins, 15 and 2 this year, 11 of those 15 games were within one score, and I think that talks about the competitiveness of our game and the importance of how we officiate it, but also the competitiveness of how we play it.”
The Chiefs are set to kick off their season against the Los Angeles Chargers in an exciting match-up scheduled for Sept. 5 in Brazil.
