Looks like it could sprout legs at any moment and go on a rampage through the city
Love the mural on Transport house
Belfast is an odd mix – lots of bomb proof buildings around which are not exactly easy on the eye mixed in with truly stunning buildings. Parts of the city need torn down and rebuilt but itβs difficult with the number of listed buildings. The old court house on the Crumlin road is being left to collapse on its own before they redevelop
Ulster hall, just for the memories and sound.
It honestly used to be the Fanum Housr building that’s now being torn down.
Amongst all the graffiti, the Edwardian buildings and bus lanes was a massive black brutalist block (I’ve lived in South Belfast my whole life so I’d always see it on my way in/I used to work beside it).
I’d struggle to argue against them improving the area but idk it was just such a ridiculous sight – like if Stanley Kubrick had directed a Soviet era film.
Aside from my laments, Lanyon is a super interesting architect – well worth looking at some of his buildings (includes Belfast Castle and Crumlin Road Jail). I also love the Linen Hall Library but libraries and museums are the best building in any city
There is an old book/record store in Berry Street along the side of H&M – has like a white brick facade which reminds me of buildings in New York
I don’t think there’s another building in Belfast quite like it
When I was going home from university I’d walk past Ewart house when it was abandoned and think someone should really fix that place up because it was a beautiful building, then about 7-8 years later I ended up working on the restoration for the main contract/building owner
One of the old gasworks buildings that has an incredible glass dome ceiling. I’d love to have a nosey in there.
The airport, takes me away from here lol
There is a certain charm to 1960s / Early 70s Brutalist / Modernist architecture.
They weren’t built with longevity in mind though and are usually consigned to the wrecking ball around the 50/60 year mark as a result (structural repairs and significant refurbishment notwithstanding)..
Belfast city center is a mish mash though. Brutalist bunker style poured concrete and steel monstrosities + a few surviving late Victorian/ early 20th century Scrabo stone , Locharbriggs , Sandstone or Balmoral Red type period buildings
So many older buildings were left to crumble , destroyed or rendered structurally unsound to the degree they had to be pulled down as a result of IRA bomb damage.. or simply zealous planners eager to sweep the old away and replace with “modern”..
The art Deco Arcadia mall looked kinda cool and shabby chic (based on pictures I’ve seen).. since it burned down in that… Um totally um.. spontaneous and completely non maliciously set fire.. (um) what remains has been Left to the ravages of the elements. Ir would be kinda cool to see what remains salvaged and restored.
I know this is supposed to be ironic, but next time you’re going past CEX on Ann St, look up, absolutely beautiful art deco facade on that building. See if you can spot the elephants.
The Scottish provident building
used to drink carry outs in the car park opposite! back in the superbowl days. good times

Just flew in from New York this morning and took this while landing at City!!! Crazy how lovely this city has become over the past decade
Has to be City Airport. Or at a push, International. Or really, any airport that gets you the fuck out.
I’m very basic, but I love City Hall. Used to spend loads of time there as a teenager π
