  6. The MAGA and MAHA dynamic remains an odd pairing. The MAHA focus is not a hill Trump wants to die on. He brought on RFK Jr. because he would dismantle government institutions and that is what MAGA wants. Kennedy just had to promise be a good MAGA solider on key issues – abortion, Medicare, trans rights, etc., which he was willing to do.

    Trump himself is all about economics and how he’s viewed internationally. If this vaccine focus threatens his standing, Kennedy is going to find himself in the same position as Musk – cast out. Nobody in MAGA world thinks he’s a true believer. He’s a useful idiot. And he’s starting to not be useful to their bigger goals.

    Probably a good idea to think about that question as you consider your Mid-Term votes… Then, too, there’s a question as to whether those possible anti-death GOPs would actually do anything about it. The total absence of any real GOP opposition to gun violence might be a data point here.

    The vaccine thing I don’t even understand the motivation for. Like what possible reason is there for this apart from wanting Americans to suffer and die for the sake of it?

  20. The “vaccine fight” is just a symptom of a larger problem. Republicans have long cobbled together electoral victories by making promises (lies) to groups with bizarre one-issue demands. Wanting the votes, they appeal to goofy anti-vaxxers knowing full well that to actually fulfill their promises they’d have to alienate larger voting blocs. Is there a federal ban on abortion? No. And they can’t ban vaccines, either.

    But it doesn’t matter because the election is over and they’ll just spew more lies when the next one comes around. And the morons who put these people in office will believe the new lies despite knowing that they were lied to the last time around.

  36. The EU has OK’d both the Pfizer and the Moderna shots. If the shots are banned here in the USA and are being given in the EU, that would really be a true test of the vaccines’ effectiveness. But we will probably not be told how many people are dying this fall and winter because the powers that be will hide the statistics. We will only know from stories being told by hospital staff, or if we have to go to emergency rooms and find them overwhelmed, etc. Before COVID was ever declared a global emergency, some of my family went overseas to Singapore and one grandson continued on to Thailand. On his way home he passed through Hong Kong and saw many, many people boarding the planes with masks on. Shortly thereafter, the news broke about a new disease breaking out. So there was news, likely in the form of rumors, about the disease in China well before it was acknowledged officially. They cannot hide it when people are dying from something new. Our methods of sharing our personal news is too out there. I think Trump had better clamp down on RFK, Jr and his new CDC staff or he will pay for it with bad public opinion. Public opinion killed his electoral chances in 2020 and it is likely to kill the Republicans chances in 2026 and 2028, if they don’t control COVID while they have the chance.

  37. Is anybody else tired of Daily Beast’s overly exaggerated headlines that usually don’t compliment the story copy very well? Their articles are paywalled so half this sub takes the headlines as gospel truth because they never read more.

    Don’t get me wrong, fuck Trump and all. But the Daily Beast feels like a funhouse mirror view of the world where yet again Trump’s undoing at the hands of bureaucrats is coming any day now. Did we learn nothing from the last time?

    RFK, who has zero medical or food/ agricultural background is single handedly destroying health/ food systems that have taken almost a century to build. He is causing significant self inflicted harm to all Americans across the nation as well as to its defense platforms against pathogens and potential arising pandemics.
