Multiple journalists killed by Israeli strikes on Gaza hospital • FRANCE 24 English

The iconic press vest worn by journalists in conflict zones the world over. In Gaza, it’s no longer a shield, but often a bullseye. The Israeli investigative media outlet 972 is reporting that a specialized PR unit of the Israeli military has been tasked with identifying Palestinian journalists it can portray as undercover Hamas operatives in order to justify targeting them with deadly strikes. There are colleagues in Gaza that are being attacked and killed by the Israeli army. This is unacceptable. Journalists should do their work uh no matter what their opinion are u whatever affiliation they have. That IDF unit is known as the legitimization cell. One of its latest targets was reportedly alazer reporter Anas al- Sharif. Nicknamed the voice of Gaza. He was one of the last on-air broadcast journalists working in the north of the besieged enclave. On August 10th, he and four colleagues were killed in an Israeli air strike on their media tent outside the Alshifa hospital in Gaza City. The IDF acknowledged it had specifically targeted al- Sharif, accusing him of being a commander of a Hamas cell. The other journalists killed alongside him apparently collateral damage. Israel has attempted to back up its accusations with unverifiable documents that even if authentic would put al Sharif’s enrollment in Hamas at age 17 with his last active service 6 years before the start of the Gaza war. Since the war began, the Israeli military has barred international journalists from entering Gaza. Critics say the ongoing killing of local journalists there is aimed at creating a full media blackout as Israel escalates its military campaign in the north of the territory. Under international law, the intentional targeting of journalists is a war crime. According to the UN, more than 240 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israel in Gaza since October 2023, a toll unparalleled in modern warfare.

Several journalists were among at least 20 people killed on August 25 in a strike on a hospital in southern Gaza, including a freelancer who worked for the Associated Press.
