Decades of the government not forcing the power providers to properly plan and maintain strategic infrastructure. Power distribution in the US is a patchwork of independent systems that do not have to work together. (see TX) IMHO, this should never have been allowed to be, without proper oversight. The Internet is much the same, for the end user.
This is why solar and battery are such a necessity – just like health insurance!
People have to start thinking this way.
It costs the same as a quality used car these days.
Sorry but that’s the truth.
“Energy is a big deal, and we’re going to get that – it’s my ambition to get your energy bill within 12 months down 50%.
Gee if only there was an alternative way to bring down the cost of electricity.
How are you baffled by Trump’s actions? The GOP has been in the pocket of oil companies for what, decades now? Trump ran on climate denial!
Trump’s actions also become entirely predictable if you assume that he will always do whatever benefits Putin. Killing off green energy increases demand for Russian oil.
It’s infuriating, but I don’t understand how one can be baffled by it unless they were born yesterday.
I bet aluminum smelters are lining up to produce in the USA
Why do you think they want to kill wind and solar? You’ll have no alternative but to pay whatever prices the billionaires want for energy.
If only there had been some act passed by a previous administration that was committed to building more sustainable energy and strengthening the power grid.
Perhaps even with a name signalling its intent to drive down inflation.
Meanwhile Nevada Energy reduced my bill and reported 46.8% share of renewables up from 39.7% a year ago.
I have thought ever since it became clear that you could power a house with solar that the grid was collapse in America.
Thanks AI!
In Canada, the province with the highest and most volatile electricity prices is Alberta, which also happens to be incredibly committed to oil& gas, and have a min-trump leader.
These things are related. I think the fact that the #1 way to reduce emissions is just to electrify everything, has seeped into fossil-fuel fans thinking, so they now see the grid itself as a competitor, regardless of how its powered. That makes them opponents of a reliable grid, and opponents of higher transmission capacity.
This is easy to see with EV adoption, where the provinces with public monopoly utilities (BC and QB) have widespread, reliable fast charger networks, even on their rural highways, and high EV adoption rates, while Alberta has a very low EV adoption rate, and you can watch commenters online from AB constantly talking up unreliability of electricity.
This is why I have multiple backups, including an off-grid solar system.
No shit, corruption at its finest.
Solar and wind are going strong in Canada and the rest of the world. Fourth world USA .
If only utilities didn’t have to generate dividends… maybe they should be removed from the hands of those that seek profit over humanity.
Maintenance is an expense that impacts profits… replacement is a tax write off… shareholders don’t care if a town or two burn
Well, we had this plan for upgrading the grid and the orange shitgibbon canned it.
In China, AI centres soak up the excess solar and wind. If hydrogen eventually takes off, the same thing can happen. Not a big deal.
For many countries, a minor problem is what to do with excess renewable power, which is developing new industries and revenue. In the US however, a Spanish Inquisition rooting out heretical sources of electricity like renewables means only fossil fuels are deemed theologically pure.
It will not end well.
The energy is getting expensive because of all the data centers throughout the country!
We technically have three, but it is still a shit show. We should have been going decentralized a long time ago.
The US infrastructure is kind of embarrassing compared to other countries. Too much wealth at the tip top and not enough put back into our cities, town, and communities.
The ridiculous amount of new data centers being built is also a pretty big factor.
Hydro-Quebec has entered the chat
Every province up here in canada has a public electric utility provider except Alberta (mine) and to absolutely no ones surprise we pay far higher prices, have a less reliable grid and are seriously lagging the country in terms of wind and solar despite getting the most hours of sunshine/ year in the whole country.
The conservative party has been in power for the last 50 years minus one 4 year stretch from 2015-2019. I want to smash things
So buy energy and utility sector ETFs. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
Meanwhile the CEO of ComEd Excelon made 15mil in 2024. 🤷♀️
Maybe it’s not decaying into ruin in my area but my electric bills in the two months in which we recorded the highest temps on record averaged $100. That’s about what i paid ten years ago. Your experience, of course, may vary.

Inverstor Owned Utilities. In other words IOU.
