Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Trump administration may declare a national housing emergency this fall as the White House looks to highlight key issues for midterm campaign voters.
“We’re trying to figure out what we can do, and we don’t want to step into the business of states, counties, and municipal governments,” Bessent told the Washington Examiner. “We may declare a national housing emergency in the fall.”
Bessent said housing affordability would be a critical leg of Republicans’ 2026 midterm election platform. Bessent declined to list any specific actions the president may take, but he suggested that administration officials are directly studying ways to standardize local building and zoning codes and decrease closing costs.

As someone from California, this is definitely a weak point for Democrats.
Translation: Trump administration weighs printing an additional $5 trillion gift for Blackrock to buy up entire neighborhoods and rent them at extortionate prices.
This is just a scheme to privatize public lands
The party of slash and burn going for another land grab.
Ghetto reclamation incoming. Purging ethnic minorities in a federal urbanization drive.
Such a drama queen
Cabrini Green coming to a neighborhood near you!
Everything is an emergency to this prick. Wake up Donnie not everything is an emergency.
“he suggested that administration officials are directly studying ways to standardize local building and zoning codes and decrease closing costs.”
Hmmm, sounds like tread on me?
This administration hasn’t met a topic it can’t fabricate an emergency about.
The problem with all of this is he will absolutely manufacture a crisis aka ‘national emergency’ in order to preempt or circumvent elections.
Wait dont tell ne, let me guess, is his solution is to open up public lands for private developers who will in no way increase the availability of affordable housing?
I agree with the government selling or leasing land. But not just out west. The US owns land in every state. The also know how to make portable homes like for Katrina very quickly. Win win win for Blackrock and friends.

About 4% of the continental US is urban, ~80% of the population lives there; ~40% of the land in the continental us is used for cows. We do not lack land for housing.
A good start would be banning corporations like Blackrock and Blackstone from vacuuming up vast swaths of the housing market. And make them divest from what they’ve already scooped up and are sitting on.
There is something seriously wrong with regard to Trump’s health – both physical as well as his mental state. To me it looks as if he is now just a puppet of Project2025; he is implementing and executing things he himself does not really believe anymore. It’s like a blackboard where you have, as steps, goals to achieve, aka “bla bla bla make use of the military to bypass civil rule of law bla bla bla” and similar token-steps. But they don’t really make any sense anymore, as Trump does not understand WHY he is doing so – other than, of course, to promote an inflated ego. But it makes no sense and everyone can see that this no longer makes any sense. Just take how Trump pissed off India recently with “50% tariffs on you guys” whereas China and Pakistan have much lower tariffs – that’s an epic fail on every level.
Everyone now sees how the superrich are being benefitted by Trump on every level – this is a heist against the common people.
Wait, what, you don’t want to step into the business of states? Are you even listening to yourself. The hypocrisy is literally overwhelming here. You actually mean that you don’t want to do it in Republican controlled states, right? Does your mother know what you do for a living or she MAGA too?
Tariff Canadian soft wood 50%. Smart! IDIOTS
I always wondered what the effect of lowering mortgage rates to under 3% then letting people lock in 30 year loans at those rates when they don’t even live in those houses.
Freedom cities, privatize lands and corporate housing.
Hard pass on all of it.
Send the guard to shoot houses
Let me guess
House the homeless in “the showers”
So they might use the coercion pressure of cancelling federal funds to states as a way to twist their arm and interfere with states rights?
