It’s 0838 September 1, and the trains are more or less done their summer lull. To my surprise today I saw a train on the tracks in Geneva thinking it was an IC1 (that I missed…) but it was actually a ‘new’ RE33. https://www.sbb.ch/en/travel-information/services-on-train/our-trains/new-ir-double-decker.html
Are they starting to run the new regional stock also on RE33 or just the car available this morning? I thought it was only for eastern CH for now.

How many minutes until someone puts their feet on those seats?
Yes, they’re slowly introducing the IR Dosto in Swiss romande from this month.
It’s very similar to the existing stock (511), in fact it is fully compatible and you’ll see them running together, but apart from running entirely on ETCS it is better adapted to longer distance regional trains like those now done from Geneva to Martigny

Whaaaat
The future of the SBB rolling stock is almost all Stadler:
– FLIRT (523): low capacity suburban and regional
– KISS (511): high-capacity suburban rail
– KISS IR (512): high-capacity interregional
– SMILE (501): high-speed intercity & international
– DuFour (tbd): general purpose loco
The only piece missing piece is a high-capacity high-speed IC to replace the IC poopy trains (502), but given that the 512 is already replacing them for IR, I wouldn’t be surprised if Stadler launches a high-speed IC KISS for that. The 512 is currently capped at 200km/h.
the new rolling stocks have been circulating around for some of the RE33 trains for a while, at least since beginning of 2025
Those RABe 512 «IR-Dosto» are not regional stock, its long distance stock. The six-coaches-long RABe 511 are Regional Stock and they will go away from the long distance services like the RE 33 after all 60 RABe 512 will delivered. The four-coaches-long RABe 511.1 are upgraded and will continue to run in the long distance fleet.
Suisse romande finally being upgraded
