From 15 to 21 September, state authorities and NGOs are organising a Civil Protection Week in Latvia, during which citizens, organisations and institutions are encouraged to prepare for various potential crises.

According to the organisers, events in recent years – natural disasters, pandemics, security threats in Europe – illustrate the importance of crisis preparedness and cooperation between citizens, non-governmental organisations, local and national authorities.

“Civil Protection Week will be held in Latvia for the first time. During the week, we encourage every Latvian citizen, organisation and institution to be aware of their role in strengthening security, including by preparing in advance for various potential crises and identifying the resources available to help others.

“In cooperation with state and local authorities, we invite you to acquire practical knowledge, identify cooperation partners and carry out practical tasks, such as downloading the 112 app or cleaning the basements of apartment buildings,” said Inese Vaivare, Head of the Civil Protection Working Group of the Civic Alliance of Latvia and Director of the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation.

The main event of the week will be the seminar ‘Involvement of NGOs in Civil Protection and Strengthening Resilience of Society’, which will take place on 17 September at the Ministry of the Interior, Čiekurkalna 1. līnija 1, k-2, Riga. The seminar is held for the second time this year on the initiative of the Ministry of the Interior.

Organisations and citizens are also invited to organise other thematic events in their communities during Civil Protection Week, sharing the hashtags #SafetyStartWithYou and #CAWeek.

The Civic Alliance of Latvia is creating a common calendar of Civil Protection Week events and initiatives. Any organisation, individual or community planning to organise activities during this time is invited to fill in the questionnaire about their event or initiative here.
