>33-year-old Dean McCarthy “burst into” the home of 34-year-old Sinead Connolly, a neighbour he had known since childhood, at Bernard Curtis House apartments in Bluebell, Dublin on 6 March 2021.
>McCarthy shot Ms Connolly three times in front of her 8-year-old daughter as she sat on her sofa, leaving her paralysed below the waist. She requires a wheelchair for all mobility, and needs to use alternate methods to manage her bladder and bowel. Her life expectancy is reduced by the injury.
>McCarthy pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possession of a G9A Grand Power semi-automatic handgun and Luger Barnaul ammunition. He has been jailed for 15 years.
>The court heard that in the lead-up to the shooting, McCarthy had subjected Ms Connolly to a campaign of abuse where he regularly called her a “whore” and had grabbed her by the throat and spat in her face. McCarthy also told her he was going to “leave her in a body bag”.
>Ms Connolly remains to this day in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire, the court heard. Her daughter is in the care of her sister, and the victim has never been in a position to return to live in her home.
>The court heard that McCarthy has 12 previous convictions, all at District Court level, which include possession of knives, criminal damage, and road traffic matters.
I’m aware the charge is attempted murder vs. manslaughter but is it not somewhat inconsistent that you’ll get [11 years if you kill someone by stamping on their head and kicking them to death](https://www.rte.ie/news/2022/0425/1294232-cork-manslaughter/), but if you attempt to kill someone, like in this article, you get 4 years more. Wouldn’t you expect this to be the other way around?
I love this country.
Im telling you capital punishment what do we do to wild animals that try kill people, put some peanut butter on the barrel and tell them to say their prayers.
I will never understand how attempted murder doesn’t get the same sentence as actual murder – just because they failed at it, it doesn’t take the intention away?!
