TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday, tracking losses on Wall Street overnight amid concern over a rise in U.S. Treasury yields.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 168.90 points, or 0.40 percent, from Tuesday to 42,141.59. The broader Topix index was down 9.82 points, or 0.32 percent, at 3,072.06.
On the top-tier Prime Market, the main decliners were information and communication, machinery and bank issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 148.57-59 yen compared with 148.32-42 yen in New York and 148.64-66 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1632-1634 and 172.82-87 yen against $1.1637-1647 and 172.66-76 yen in New York and $1.1645-1647 and 173.10-14 yen in Tokyo late Tuesday afternoon.
