So I just read the news about that Nigerian guy who is trying to start some rebellion in Nigeria from FInland. By accident I ended up encountering the article "nigerians in Finland" and found some numbers in regards to how many nigerians reside in Finland.
I was sceptical about the numbers so I asked chatgpt to find a functioning source for the numbers and they backed them up.
This is not a post that is meant to question immigration but more a post that wonders about what made the numbers of Nigerians literally double in a period of 4 years? Something must have happened during that time period to make such a drastic difference [yeah I know covid but that doesnt prompt people to go Finland].

Leftist goverment with infinite money.
Just me guessing because it’s probably the same for Pakistanis but around covid it became a big thing to study in Finland because requirements were less strict, much cheaper to study in such a good country compared to let’s say the UK or the US. Citizenship was much easier to obtain because study time counted towards citizenship unlike Sweden for example.
All these probably caused a lot of master’s students to move who can also bring their families with them. Finland basically gave the best chance to start a new life for yourself and family legally and settle down super quickly just 5 years for citizenship.
Now rules have changed and will continue to get stricter but so many people took the opportunity in the last couple of years.
Looking at the change per year, it wasn’t an abnormal time.
2010 they found a loophole, which is too racist to us Finns to plug.
I don’t know any facts, but I guess it is because immigration to EU from Nigeria has increased as whole during last decade or so. People land in Italy, then move norther in hopes of better life. Some flee from prostitution, and some are victims of prostitution even in Finland.
It is easy to double when the starting point is low. Nigeria has population of 230 million and is dealing with instability, so many want out.
Also, the rules for bringing family members got loosed a bit, so part of the number is likely people bringing their wives and children here.
Looking for me, their prince is going to give me a lot of money really soon and I guess they want some.
Finland has been seeing strong immigrant population growth in recent years. It’s not only Nigerians, but also other African nationalities.
And besides Africa and Middle East, Finland gets a lot of new immigrants from Asia, and more precisely Southern and Eastern Asia, like India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia etc…
People are moving to Finland for a better life, they see it as a land of opportunities especially people in Africa and Asia. A lot of them are coming for studies. Finland is said to be the happiest country in the world all over the internet. However unfortunately, not all new immigrants in Finland are able to find a proper job and live a good life.
There have been increasing number of Nigerians struggling with college funding in Finland because they were victims of a scam where company promised to deal with their college bills for short while and arrange move to Finland for exhange of prepaid sun of money.
possibly more agressive scam campaign funding? Nigeria has insane high population, so agressive ad campaign does not have to be hyper successfull.
Sanna Marin opened vocational schools and let student’s family to join and use taxpayers money to educate their children. It was plus thing for many. I think new government try and will revert this destructional law.
think COVID-19 pushed it down. For example, it was no longer so easy to travel internationally. Some countries had no air traffic at all, others had very strict controls and you had to show a negative covid- test for international travel, had to be resident in one of the 2 trave and so on.
The numbers are so low, that even few hundred people can make the percentages look wild.
Nigerians are still very small minority, about 0,056 % of the total population and less than 6 % of the African-born immigrants in Finland and less than one percent of all immigrants.
We’re much too lenient and gullible.
Easiest answer is covid.
The ex prime minister once promised to house immigrants to his own house.
Surprised to see that there were so few Nigerians in Finland back in 2010. Watching the Africa Cup of Helsinki in those days I recall there being a relatively large following for the Nigerian team. They must’ve all lived in Helsinki. If my memory serves me they were quite the dominant team for a few years and actually won’t it this year too battering Sierra Leone in the final.
Just curious what made you look into the immigration of Nigerians and their small numbers?
Migri publishes [statistics](https://tilastot.migri.fi/index.html#decisions/21205/59). In 2024, first residence permits were given to 1602 Nigerian citizens. Out of them, 682 were for students, 228 for work, 662 for family reasons, and 30 for other purposes.
The number of new student residence permits will be much smaller in 2025 because of fewer scholarships. So far, it is 223.
They just wanna be happy man

Just a thought but maybe Ekpa has something to do with it. He just got sentenced in Finland and he is the opposition leader in Nigeria and has a huge following.
Government pays “family unification” so it’s exponential if you have somebody in.
