The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous to protect the safety of patients, runs a weekly clinic for asylum seekers and refugees housed at the hotel in East Sussex.

She offers 20 minute appointments, where she has seen first-hand the experiences of asylum seekers living in the county.

Having been into the hotel, which predominantly houses women and children, she described the living conditions and shared how she hoped to help dispel rumours that asylum seekers are living in luxury.

She said: “The hotel is not nice at all, it’s smelly and dirty.

“Many of my patients tell me that their rooms and not clean, and that staff don’t respect their privacy. They said how if they were to complain, it would only make their lives harder.

“I have been in a number of times and I think what they’ve done is sectioned off the rooms, so they’re not proper walls. The rooms are very small, and the ceilings are low. I have patients who are very tall saying they bump their heads.”

She also highlighted issues with the quality of food provided, and the impact this has on patient’s health and wellbeing.

“The government has a contract with catering companies who bring in pre-packaged meals, like microwave meals.

“The food is not healthy and a lot of people say it’s horrible and inedible. The portion sizes aren’t very good either.

“I’ve had breast feeding mothers telling me they’re hungry. Patients who are diabetic who aren’t getting the right kind of food, and patients with high cholesterol saying the food is oily.

“Some even say they gag when they eat it. Children are not eating. It’s not satisfactory.”

The comments come as tensions rise across the country over the housing of asylum seekers in the UK.

In recent months, protests have been held at the Copthorne Hotel, near Crawley, and the Park Hotel in Chichester, which are believed to be housing asylum seekers.

St George’s flags have also been appearing as part of a national movement called “Operation Raise the Colours”.

Some have said this has been fuelled by anger about immigration, whereas others say that it is an act of patriotism.

She said: “They are not getting luxury at all. There’s so much misinformation out there.

“They don’t get iPads. I don’t know where this has come from. There’s so much ignorance out there.

“It really needs to stop, people need to be informed.”

She added: “The majority of my patients are anxious and depressed. Many are struggling with PTSD.

“They are bored, and they want to do something, they want to work.”

She explained how many people have to wait years for their cases to be heard, being given an allowance of less than £10 a week in the mean time.

“It’s frustrating that people are so misinformed.

“I’ve built up relationships with patients over the last few years and they are not trying to scrounge a free living. They are coming here under very difficult circumstances.

“They have no option but to leave their homes and they really want to do something with their lives. They have skills the can offer and they want to.

“I don’t believe that anybody I’ve seen came with the intention of thinking it’s a free ride, it’s not the case at all.”

She added: “I understand for the government it’s a difficult situation and there’s limited resources. But I think we are forgetting the human side of this.

“These people have been dehumanised by the government and those protesting don’t have a clue”.
