John Oliver knows a royal wedding when he sees one.
The Last Week Tonight with John Oliver host, 48, shared his thoughts on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s upcoming nuptials during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
During their chat, host Stephen Colbert brought up the couple’s engagement, playfully dubbing them the “prince and princess,” and even noted that PEOPLE has even described their wedding as “America’s Royal Wedding.” He then asked Oliver to “compare and contrast” Swift and Kelce’s wedding to the royal family’s past nuptials.
“This is better than the royal family, but your bar for comparison is simply too low. Anything is better than a royal wedding,” Oliver said, after previously noting that he did not “like the royal family at all.”
“Also America’s royal weddings are royal weddings,” he added, pointing out to the grander scale of American nuptials.

The comedian couldn’t resist poking fun at America’s royal fever, especially when it comes to weddings across the pond.
“Americans are really the only ones who care about those,” Oliver said. “When they interview people [in] the mall in London… whenever it’s a royal wedding. It’s just Americans saying, ‘We love it here. We love the pomp and circumstance.’ “
“… You could have had those royal weddings if you didn’t throw your little tantrum a few hundred years ago,” he joked, referring to America’s split from England in 1776. “But it can’t be one foot out, one foot in. Pick a side.”
Swift and Kelce announced their engagement on Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 26, alongside photos from their garden proposal. One snap showed the NFL player getting down on one knee as the pop star held his face, while in another, the couple could be seen embracing happily.
The Grammy winner also made sure to show off her new “old mine brilliant cut” engagement ring Kelce designed with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry on her ring finger. The sparkler could be seen in various photos as Swift held her hand up.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” the “Fortnight” singer wrote in the caption.

A source recently told PEOPLE that the couple have not started wedding planning yet. “Taylor and Travis have been in celebration mode ever since the engagement,” an insider close to the couple said. “They are not in the wedding planning phase yet.”
However, Kelce recently admitted that he was anticipating the wedding planning on his New Heights podcast. He said, “it’s gonna go crazy. That is the next step, yeah, I’ve heard about that.”
