Pope Leo XIV was given a special gift with connections to Alabama on Wednesday.Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles Director Cam Ward shared several pictures on social media of the moment when he presented the Pope with a Troy University quilt. Ward is also on the school’s board of trustees.”I was honored to sit with him on this great occasion,” Ward said.Ward told WVTM 13 that he got the chance to speak with the Pope on criminal justice issues during a trip to the Vatican.Pope Leo, born Robert Francis Prevost, made history earlier this year as the first American to hold the position in the Catholic Church’s 2,000-year history.While not directly connected to the state of Alabama, he does have ties to the South, with roots in New Orleans on his mother’s side and a brother who lives in Florida.
