My condolences Joao. We all know that place, who thought this could happen.

  1. It must be once again fake maintenance reports, it’s common in all PIGS countries, but they will come up with some random bullshit as the main cause for the derailment like always.

  2. Portugal will now change the GDP growth forecast to recession

  3. My condolences, such a horrible thing to happen. I have never been there but these cable cars are just so much of your places flair and tradition, I hope they will be able to find what happened here so that they can prevent any future accident like this and you are able to keep this huge part of your local culture.

  4. The poor 3 yo kid that was seen in the wreck crying really gets to me. Father dead and mother critical, not sure if she was the one not making it as there is another confirmed death. Probably they protected him during the crash.

  5. Sending love to our Portuguese bros. This is a tragedy and hope all is fixed soon. My condolences ❤️

  6. It’s 20 years I’m wondering how this funicular and this city still works. Ronaldo can buy a neighborhood, but the city look like third world.

  7. Meus pêsames irmãos, and to Hans and whoever else lost somebody in the accident

  8. Sorry to hear about this irmãos 🙁 may their memories be a blessing

  9. Damn that’s sad. I hope they will find out what went wrong so that it can work once again some day

  10. This is horrible news. Condolences to the involved and all the Portuguese.

  11. Fucking tragic, how horrible it must have been. The kid… parents dead and the cop stayed with him all the time never left his side not even at the hospital. My condolences to the victim’s families

  12. Its’s too sad, I can’t see the news without shed a tear.

    My condolences irmãos. 😞

  13. Sinto muito. Como sempre, desejo tudo de bom para a nossa família.

  14. Pushing all the usual messing we do here slide, I love Portugal. I love Lisbon. It’s one of my favourite cities on the planet. I’ve ridden on that funicular.

I’m currently here in the Algarve at the moment and my heart is breaking for you all.

    What a devastating tragedy.

  15. Shit. I thought this kind of accident only happened in Italy.

    So sorry Joao

  16. Holy fuck, what actually happened? And how?

Because that’s a gruesome death toll for a tram. It looks like it got literally tossed against the building.

  17. This is horrible to see. My condolences to everyone involved.
    🇪🇺❤️🇵🇹.

  18. 😢😢😢 RIP. Condolences to people who lost their love ones.

  19. Never been but I knew of its existence as it is such an iconic part of Lisbon. It sucks that this happened. RIP to those affected. 😞

  20. My condolences to everyone who has to go through trauma and grief as a consequence of this tragedy. I am shocked, but sadly not surprised…

In response to “Who thought this could happen”, apparently a lot of people… This elevator derailed in 2018 as well, but Carris kept it quiet because no one was even injured. Maintenance was outsourced instead of being performed by Carris workers, who had complained about maintenance not being performed as it should.

Nothing will be learnt from this, because Portugal never learns. We work on reaction instead of prevention. 7 years ago we had massive forest fires that killed 100 people. You would think that measures would have been taken to prevent such a thing from happening again. Nope, this year we had the largest fire ever recorded in Portugal, and a total of 3% of our area burned.

This will lead to a thorough investigation, probably some inquiry comission that will lead to nowhere and eventually everyone forgets and moves on, and the underlying issues that led to this tragedy remain.
