So I was today years old when I discovered that the area where I live is affected by the WEKO block.

I was so excited when I saw some maps showing the fiber optics installed right up to the entry door… (it'd be a first for me) and then when I enquired about how to set it up, I was told the area where I live is affected by the WEKO block…

So now I'm wondering… is this affecting many people in Switzerland? How far did Swisscom get installing these before they were stopped? How are people feeling about this? And should I dare to ask: is there any resolution in my lifetime sight?

  1. It‘s already resolved. Swisscom must convert all P2MP fiber to P2P by the end of the year. All new fiber must be built in P2P topology.

  2. It’s not a WEKO block, it’s a “Swisscom didn’t follow the law and thought they can get away with it” block.

  3. There is no “WEKO Block”. That is just an euphemism that Swisscom uses to blame others for the consequences of Swisscom’s own continued and deliberate illegal actions.

Thanks to the WEKO, Swisscom is now forced to convert the illegally built lines to proper P2P lines. According to the WEKO-ruling, the deadline for the conversion is until the end of 2025. So until your lifetime will end very soon, a resolution within your lifetime should be in sight.

(However afaik the deadline for the conversion is only valid for P2MP lines that Swisscom had already put in operation. In case you’re in an area where they started to build P2MP but never put it into operation before the WEKO ruling, they might not need to convert it until the end of 2025 and can also chose to let the lines rot instead.)

  4. Swisscom continued to build about 400’000 connections after it was ruled to be illegal for the first time (December 2020).

They have to convert them to P2P until the end of 2025, but they can also just disable them. So there is no guarantee what will happen.
If there is no date on [http://swisscom.ch/checker](http://swisscom.ch/checker) or [https://ftth.init7.net/](https://ftth.init7.net/), then there will probably nothing happen for the next at least 12 Months.

  5. The „glasfaserstreit“ is interesting: https://blog.init7.net/de/die-glasfaserstreit-geschichte/ technology wise, the outcome is amazing I think. On a political/strategic level, it would be good to have a clearer picture of what happens when/where in regards to the FTTH build out in CH.. and also, I don’t know, if there is a formal promise/statement/goal of connecting all households/commercial buildings in CH.. but I am optimistic at this point, that it is going to happen eventually.
