To hear people talk about modern medical miracles with such distaste is shameful to people who study and dedicate their life to being better. As much as it is funny to make fun of him, it is scary to see progress being loss.

  22. One of the saddest aspects of this whole affair is that mRNA vaccines (mRNA therapeutics in general), are probably one of the coolest, most advanced biomedical technologies to be produced in the last 10 years, probably even in the last century.

    I work in this field and if you had told me 10 years ago that we’d have something like mRNA technology today, I’d say you were reading too much sci-fi. Yet, we do, and it has proven its worth during a devastating pandemic that would have been much worse if we didn’t have these vaccines.

    And the COVID vaccines are just the beginning. mRNA has so many potential applications, from vaccines to cancer therapies, it’s mind boggling that the USA would want to forfeit these advances to other nations. Because, make no mistake, this has the potential to usher in a new age of therapies that no true world power would want to miss out on.

  26. You know what actually *does* kill people? Heroin. But you were fine with using that for more than a decade (and yes, I know people can change. But you shouldn’t be in charge of the nation’s health when this is something you did for as long as he did especially. Also fine with roadkill, things that give you brain worms, supposedly getting mercury poisoning, spreading “benefits” of raw milk that also can cause death in certain people etc.) As personal beliefs or past problems, that’s one thing. But they should disqualify you from being the most important health official we have. You shouldn’t be giving health advice when you’ve placed your own health in jeopardy so many times and seem content to do so to others as well

  27. mRNA could be the key to treating countless diseases, including cancer. It’s the penultimate result of all of humanity’s knowledge up to this point. To make wild, baseless claims like this is to potentially kill an innumerable amount of people that may have otherwise not had to die.

  28. I’m a biochemist, all I have to add to this is that this man is an absolute fucking imbecile and actual monster. The ability to directly insert custom mRNA into cells is probably the single most transformational medical advancement since antibiotics, it is going to dramatically alter medicine and cure/manage a LOT of currently horrific ailments… and all of that is being delayed by years because of this single pathetic, ignorant motherfuckers ego.

    Of all the evil that is coming out of this fascist shitshow, this is the one that is going to be directly responsible for the most unnecessary death and suffering.

    And that’s before even getting to the massive financial and academic cost. We are literally incentivizing driving all the science and investment in this stuff out of the country. We are PAYING money to shoot ourselves in the foot and shoot our sick family and friends in the head, for very literally no reason whatsoever.

    Pathetic isn’t nearly strong enough of a word for what is happening right now.
