Originally commissioned by the U.S. as USS Phoenix, she saw action in the Pacific theatre of World War II before being sold by the United States to Argentina and renamed ARA General Belgrano.
She is the only ship to have been sunk during military operations by a nuclear-powered submarine.
323 were killed in the sinking.
The last gasp of the dying empire.
cld. so cold.
Our pilot sunk the SS atlantic conveyor… Always in other peoples wars xd
Survived Pearl Harbor, survived WW2 nad then was sunk by the british 44 years after being commissiond.
Survived the Japanese bt not the British..
This single action made the Argentine never leave port again.
Argentine air force had to fight the war alone. They should have just taken their losses and withdraw from the Falklands, without naval support they couldn’t withstand British naval invasion, although their air force REALLY did their best.
♫ We are Back in control, force them to surrender
Take what is ours, restore law and order
Back in control, push them further out to sea
Falklands in our hands, back under British reign! ♫
The captain of the Belgrano testified that the ship was a legitimate military target.
