  10. It’s crazy how one mistake can end a political career, I mean it’s deserved in this case as housing minister it’s just unacceptable.

    But all it takes is one slip up and you’re gone.

    EDIT: I’m getting misinterpreted a bit, I mean more it’s crazy how bad dress whether it’s deserved or undeserved can end a politicians career in a flash.

    She had to go I’m not defending her, a public servant who is also the Housing Minister not paying full tax on her own house is beyond hypocrisy and corrupt. Good riddance.

    It was more you can spend years or a lifetime in politics but if you slip up and how the press weave public perceptions then your gone

  11. Is she going to give her child the £160k she stole to buy a property? Clearly that kid would inherit both properties in time so should have them both via parental inheritance plus the value in the trust given by the NHS in recognition of their injury.

  18. Had to happen, her position was untenable. Appreciate there are levels of tax dodging and corruption across all parties (mostly tory but others too) but she so ferociously attacked on this angle a number of times.

    Now to see what happens next, who will be deputy leader, will she throw any grenades.

    She no doubt has been stitched up internally on this, and probably has a fair bit of dirt she could dish out if she wanted.

  22. Looking at this another way, it makes all politicians look bad – when you think of all the scandals, on all sides, in recent years.

    It just paints a picture to the man in the street they’re all hiding something. All trying to use their power or finances to exploit loopholes, legitimate or not.

    It really started, IMO, with the expenses scandal. What happened with covid was a catalyst to worse the trust and belief in politicians. Every time now just damages it for all of them.

  30. Now she has lost her ministerial salary can she afford the mortgage payments on her £800,000 flat in Brighton? Would the mortgage have been approved on her new lower salary? Hope she doesn’t fall into arrears and get repossessed. Perhaps she should move back to Manchester.

  36. Actually surprised they made the moral decision here but considering she was the last of the at least sort of left wing politician in that government my hopes for a radical approach and autum budget that isn’t just liz trussified is lower than it already was.

  38. Good to see accountability and consequences in action after people getting away with the most ridiculous bullshit for so long. Its a refreshing change. Its a shame for her but it’s healthy to see a government sticking to its principles. Wish everyone else that broke ministerial code could get booted too but the last lot didn’t give a shit for rules or integrity.

    But here’s where I feel sorry for her, she is actually working class (few in labour). And all she’s done is buy a house and the government of this land has it’s hand out for about 70 bloody grand.

  41. I’m never been that found of her to be honest always came across as a bit of a brainlet. Whilst her canned response seemed reasonable enough on the face of it you can’t present to be holier than though without being holier than though so probably the only logical outcome.
