European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has held a phone call with US Vice President JD Vance to coordinate efforts on sanctions against Russia, the European Commission’s chief spokesperson Paola Pinho told journalists, European Pravda reported on September 5.
According to Pinho, the conversation focused on maintaining unity in applying economic pressure on Moscow.
“This conversation between President von der Leyen and Vice President JD Vance was about maintaining a united front on sanctions,” she said.
She underlined the importance of close coordination with allies. “The more we coordinate our approach with partners, the more effective the sanctions are.”

Pinho pointed to joint EU–G7 measures such as the oil price cap, which she said “are delivering results.”
“We will continue to put pressure on Russia’s war economy, to raise the cost for Russia of refusing to engage in peace talks, and ultimately to bring President Putin to the negotiating table,” the spokesperson emphasized.
“That is exactly what President von der Leyen also discussed in this call with the Vice President of the United States,” Pinho added.
Earlier, during his visit to Uzhhorod, European Council President António Costa stressed that any peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine must be held with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
