Hello, i live an apartment in espoo. In our apartment we have this smoke alarm, we regularly test it and it beeps as expected.

From some time we have encountered that this smoke alarm goes off at random time without any incident happening. It hase been continuously a week now that every night around 1 am it goes off, then we wake up check the apartment and as we expect, find nothing wrong, no burning smell or no such incidents.

We dont cook that often so it cannot be food related and all the other electronic at home are in very good shape too. Now it has crossed a line that today when i am staying home, it chose to go off and since i was home, i quickly silenced the alarm. I dont know what would happen if we are not home and it chose to go off without any cause.

I wonder what can be the issue? And who should i contact? Can anyone share their idea or thought?

  1. Did you try swapping the battery? These things beep to warn about the battery getting low.

  2. We had the same alarm same problem. It was too close to a ventilation shaft and gathered dust on it. Place was moved and we vacuumed the holes and now its fine.

  3. It’s dirty/ dust accumulation. Use a vacuum or compressed air to clear it out. After that it will stop.
Might also work to just shake it a bit, but the problem might return in a month or two.

  4. If you can’t figure it out and you live in an apartment then you can just call maintenance to come and install you a new one or move it to a better place etc.

The law changed recently where the smoke alarms are no longer the tenant’s responsibility

  5. How old is it?

Replace it or ask housing to replace. Its a hazard

  6. Does it happen after you take a shower? Water vapour can sometimes trigger these things.

  7. It usually means that you need to change the battery if it goes off when nothing happens.

  8. The weather has been very humid and that can trigger the newer alarms that aren’t based on radioactive components. Common problem on boats, apparently

  9. Dirt and dust can cause false alarms, but if dusting and vacuuming the alarm doesn’t help, it may be that the alarm’s batteries are running low. Finnish alarms are built to notify you early when the batteries are about to run out so that people don’t forget to change the batteries in time and the occasional beeping becomes more frequent as the battery charge decreases.

  10. Goes off, as in long loud tone, dirty or broken.

If it beeps shortly the battery is low.

  11. The alarm might have expired, was it bought a long time back?
