  1. Submission Statement:

Asked in a tv interview about Trump’s social media post that virtually jettisoned India as a US partner following the SCO summit in Tianjin, Lutnick likened India’s position to that of Canada, which he said had backed down from its adversarial “elbows up” stance to make a deal after realizing its economy was tanking.

“In a month or two months, I think India is going to be at the table, and they’re gonna say they’re sorry, and they’re going to try to make a deal with Donald Trump and it will be on Donald Trump’s desk how he wants to deal with Modi, and we leave that to him.

Lutnick also warned India to “Stop buying Russian oil, stop being a part of BRICS, and support the United States and the dollar or face a 50% tariff.”

  2. My prediction: Howard Lutnick will say “I did not say that, you are making it up” soon.

  3. Lutnick’s second recent big mouth event. Before that he said nVidia h20 is 4th tier technology only to get chinese addicted.

Chinese gov promptly told the companies not to buy them.

  4. My brother in christ… When India didn’t buckle under the pressure of crippling sanctions imposed on it in the aftermath of nuclear tests, why would it do now ?

That time India was hit with sanctions by the entire west at a time when India was a failed socialist economy…

Right now, it’s the fastest developing major economy with a massive domestic market. It’s been hit just by tariffs, nothing else. And surprise, no other nation wants a part of it. If anything they are ready to help India bypass the tariff pressure.

Learn from the past, it would do you all a great good.

  5. Most Indians would be ok with some backchannel talks and maybe even some concessions to the Americans if things get really bad, but anything even resembling an apology and modi can kiss the next election good bye.

  6. At some point, you just can’t bully everyone to do what you want.

Its almost like cooperation is needed

  7. There has been virtually no clarity about what the status of the trade negotiations are and what America actually wants. I suspect that Trump’s own team don’t quite know and that he was the main barrier to getting a deal done because of whatever personal grudges he has against India and Modi.

His recent tweets about how it may be too late even after India offered to slash their tariffs suggest that he has no interest in negotiations anymore, and this confirms it somewhat.

    >“In a month or two months, I think India is going to be at the table, and they’re gonna say they’re sorry, and they’re going to try to make a deal with Donald Trump-and it will be on Donald Trump’s desk how he wants to deal with Modi,” TOI quoted Lutnick as saying.

    >Lutnick also warned India to “Stop buying Russian oil, stop being a part of BRICS, and support the United States and the dollar or face a 50% tariff.”

    >Contending that India and China will not be able to sell goods to each other, he maintained that they will eventually have to come to the US because “it’s our $30 trillion economy that is the consumer of the world… (and) we all know eventually the customer is always right.”

Now the demands have grown from Russian oil to India leaving BRICS and supporting the dollar. This confirms that what Trump is looking for now isn’t low tariffs or a trade deal, but a sign of public surrender to humiliate India. Until he gets it, the tariffs will remain indefinitely.

**I do hope all the people who gave Trump the benefit of the doubt and assumed that India was in the wrong here own up to their mistake.**

  8. At this point i only feel sorry for the Indian diaspora in US can relate to what they have to face on a daily basis

  9. ah Howard Loonatik. Everytime he gives an interview, i feel like pulling teeth.

  10. India is not a friend to the US. I hope someday we realize it.

  11. The arrogance of these people in the Trump Admin is astounding … if anything this will lead to India digging in their heals. I don’t understand how these people think we can go around humiliating people into doing whatever we want. We are killing our image, we are making ourselves look like bullies.

  12. Why are people in the US government repeatedly discussing India’s tariffs on US news channels?

Seems like there’s too much focus for something that’s not a domestic issue. There is literally no new development in the situation, and won’t be until India reacts or responds in any way.

This outsized focus makes no sense, unless they are really hoping for an early capitulation or concession from India.

  13. Maybe, but they will resent you for it and you can count on them not to share intelligence anymore and make sure that next time they won’t find themselves in the same weak position.
