This article describes how the Indonesian government is carrying out the “world’s largest deforestation project” including a fifth of the entire Trans-Fly ecoregion, a patchwork of flooded grasslands, forest, and savanna that contains a heady mixture of both tropical rainforest species the endemic New Guinea crocodile, and Australian savanna species such as tree kangaroos, wallabies, gliding possums, and the dusky pademelon, one of the world’s smallest marsupials, and half of the 800 or so bird species on New Guinea, including numerous species of birds of paradise. This mega-farm project will also upend the lives of thousands of indigenous people.
It also discusses how the Indonesian government’s campaign of environmental is related to oligarchs such as palm-oil magnate Andi Syamsuddin Arsyad and Martias Fangiono (owner of Merauke Sugar Group), government and military ethno-chauvinism, a desire to produce ethanol, and Chinese corporations (who sold the land excavators)
Depressing beyond words.
As a species we really are the dumbest thing on the planet. This is so backwards and will do so much harm to the entire region and the planet.
This is terrible news
Good time to stop buying Indonesian products.
