HOOVER – The battle of the Hoover City Schools volleyball teams flipped over to Spain Park’s favor in emphatic fashion as the Jaguars swept their crosstown rival at home.

The Spain Park Jaguars defeated the Hoover Buccaneers 3-0 on Thursday, Sept. 4 at Jag Arena to take the lone meeting of the year between the two Hoover-based schools.

With the win, Spain Park took its first regular-season victory over Hoover since the 2022 season. The Jags’ last win over the Bucs in any competition came in 2023 during the North Super Regionals in the third-place seeding matchup.

Spain Park started out on the right foot in the first set, battling against a Hoover team that brought the set down to the last few points.

The Jags finished the set strong and secured the 25-21 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match, establishing themselves as the early favorites.

The win paved the way for a big performance in the second set where Spain Park rolled to a big lead and grew it to double digits.

In the end, the Jags took the second set by a score of 25-15, extending their match lead to 2-0 in dominant fashion. The victory put them in position to finish off the match with just one more set win.

Spain Park continued to be in control in the third set, but Hoover made the third set closer than the second set and lurked within striking distance.

However, as the final points approached, the Jags got in position to close out the match, and they did just that.

Spain Park won the third set in 25-19 fashion, putting a wrap on a 3-0 sweep in the match to defeat its crosstown rival.

The Jags took their record to 9-3 overall with the win over the Bucs. Spain Park has the weekend off from tournament action and will kick off its area slate with the first of back-to-back area matches. The opening match will be at home against the Chelsea Hornets on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.
