Ratko Mladic is a convicted war criminal that commited a genocide and is serving the rest of his life in jail because of that. A state that supports him and protects murals that portray him as a hero has serious issues with dealing with its past.
It is good that some activists have a working moral compass, but try to imagine what would have happened had a mural praising Heinrich Himmler as a hero been made in Berlin. I don’t think the reaction would have been limited to two women activists protesting and getting detained by the police. It would have caused an outrage. This is because Germany and its society have distanced themselves from their war criminals of the past…something that the Serbian state and society are far from achieving.

It’s jarring what a public shitshow this has become. Instead of a mural quietly being removed as it should’ve been, there was a public announcement about getting rid of it for all to see which caused the shit from the bottom of the barrel to rise up and threaten violence, and for police to announce that they will be there to stop any sort of altercation. They couldn’t have done a better job creating tensions if they tried.
In the meantime our government just adopted the proposition of the new referendum law – census is to be abolished. The explanation for it is:
> The new law eliminates the shortcomings of a number of solutions from the current law, due to which citizens rarely used the institutes of referendums and people’s initiatives in practice.
In a couple of months we are supposed to have a referendum on our constitution being changed. When this law comes to pass, any slight semblance of democracy we might still retain in this country will evaporate like a fart in the wind and we will be even more fucked. Who’d have thought that was possible, huh?
Now nobody knows who’s drinking and who’s paying, everyone is pointing fingers at everyone over this stupidity, our government thrives on manufactured conflict and our lovely neighbors to the south are readily relegating generalizations of Serbian genocidal tendencies to those beyond. Meanwhile an average Serb just wants to live another day of our miserable lives in relative peace.
