‘A not-so-subtle swipe at Trump’ as Xi warns of war or peace • FRANCE 24 English

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un for talks in Beijing today. At the start of the meeting, Putin praised what he called the bravery and heroism of North Korean soldiers who fought alongside Russian troops in Ukraine. Putin saying the Korean soldiers helped repel a Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s border region of Kursk. Now, Kim did not specifically mentioned the Ukrainian war, but he did say North Korea was prepared to do everything possible to help Russia. Those two leaders were the VIP guests of Chinese President Xiinping. There to attend China’s biggest ever military parade that marked the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II. Now, this was the first such gathering of the three count’s leaders since the early days of the Cold War. For the latest on what’s happening in China today, we’re going to bring in now our regional correspondent, Yan Kazin Broomi. Yan, what are the biggest images today, the symbols to note? Well, as you’ve been mentioning there, these streets in Beijing have been shut down entirely as a procession, a military procession that has been practiced for weeks. We’ve seen videos of these soldiers practicing their marching, their steps, shut down Beijing, uh took hours to pass through. It’s marking the World War II defeat of Japan. Japan that occupied large areas of China during that period of time and committed war crimes, war crimes and atrocities across China. People lined up to watch it in Beijing. It was a guestonly event to get into the actual event, but people, locals in Beijing, lined up on the sides of the streets to try and catch a glimpse of these new military technologies, new weapons, uh, robots we’ve been seeing moving their way down as Xi Jinping also moved his way down in the back of an armored vehicle inspecting the troops. The main site, of course, the big thing that we’ve all been wanting to see, we all been looking out for for the last few days has been that big trilateral meeting between Russia’s Vladimir Putin, North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, and China’s Xi Jinping, who of course was playing the role of a host for this entire event. That’s something that we did see videos coming out, photos coming out showing those three world leaders, those three controversial leaders walking side by side. This is the first time that Kim Jong-un has ever gone to an event that has had this many leaders. It’s the first time he’s met both of these two together. He’s met them both separately in the past. Xi Jinping used this as an opportunity to paint a picture of what a world could look like that is not dominated by the US. He said, “Mankind is faced with a choice between peace and war, dialogue or confrontation, win-win or zero sum.” That’s a not so subtle swipe towards Trump and the United States. Trump, while this was all going on, saying accusing these three leaders of conspiring against the United States. It’s part of a picture that Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong-un have been painting in the last few days of a world that is not dominated by the United States. And that comes together with this massive show of military might that was tail ended by the release of thousands of doves into the sky.
