Venezuela builds up border security in response to deployment of US warships • FRANCE 24 English

A military convoy rolls through central Venezuela headed west towards the Colombian border as Caracus steps up operations to combat drug trafficking in the region. We will have a significant deployment of drones with different missions, security checkpoints and surveillance, Navy patrols along rivers, especially in the Katatumbo River that flows into the Gulf of Venezuela. Venezuela. Drug trafficking, though, is not the only impetus for the mobilization. Venezuela has already deployed warships and drones along the country’s northern coast, a response to the US sending three naval destroyers and 4,000 Marines to the region. Washington says that move is also ostensibly aimed at fighting drug cartels. The Trump administration though has accused Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro himself of being at the head of a cocaine trafficking cartel, offering a $50 million bounty for his capture to face charges. Maduro, who was sworn in for a third term this year despite significant evidence he had lost re-election, remaining defiant as the US once again tries to loosen his grip on power. The world cannot be like it was 100 years ago with gunboat diplomacy. I have so many cannons, so many ships, and I put them in front of you, and you surrender or do as I say. No, those days are over. The Venezuelan president has accused the US of attempting regime change and launched a drive to recruit thousands of militia members. Despite the buildup, most analysts see an actual US military intervention in Venezuela as unlikely. Washington instead seems likely to continue its campaign of so-called maximum pressure, including an ongoing oil embargo, measures that have so far failed to dislodge Maduro.

Venezuela on Monday announced the deployment of 15,000 troops to the Colombia border to fight drug trafficking amid accusations from Washington that Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro is heading a cocaine-trafficking cartel. Three US warships have been deployed to Venezuela’s coast to step up pressure on Maduro.

  1. There are pretty well documented cases against the drug cartels and micro traffic that has plagued latín America in recent years, what the USA is doing has nothing to do with it. They want to do to Latin America what they have been doing in the middle east for decades.

  2. Maduro could’ve avoided this by not ignoring drug trafficking in his country and hundreds of thousands Venezuelans at US border claiming asylum from this guy

  3. loosen his grip? we're not going to loosen his grip on power. we're just going to chop off his hands and feet, drag his a$$ back to the US to face our courts. anyone that gets in the way will just need to look to the skies to see whats over their head

  8. Maduro is a Colombian born cartel boss that is posing as a leader of Venezuela. He lost the last election and everyone in the world knows it. The Venezuelan people deserve better.
