New Delhi: The US has sent relief material in several planes to help the people affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan. The US Embassy in Islamabad gave this information in an official statement. It said that relief material has been brought to Pakistan by US military planes at the request of the Pakistani army. These planes landed at Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi on Friday, September 6, where Pakistani army officials and US Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker received the relief material.
What did the US Embassy say?
The embassy wrote, “US military aircraft delivered essential materials at the request of the Pakistani army to deal with the devastating floods. At Nur Khan Air Base, CDA Baker expressed his deepest condolences to the people of Pakistan whose lives have been devastated by widespread, devastating floods.”
The relief material will be delivered to Pakistan through a total of six aircraft under the US Army’s Central Command (US ARCENT). These include tents, water purification pumps, generators and other essential equipment. According to the Pakistan Army Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), the first consignment has been formally handed over to the Pakistan Army.
Punjab floods
The Punjab province has been badly affected due to heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan. Millions of people are affected by the floods, their houses are submerged, crops are destroyed, and a large number of people are forced to live in temporary camps. The Sindh government has estimated that more than 1.6 million people may be affected due to flood waters entering Sindh from Punjab. If there is a high level of flood in Sindh, the situation may worsen, increasing economic pressure on Pakistan.
US delegation visits NEOC
Along with the relief operations, US Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker and the Disaster Response Group of the US Central Command visited the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC). Baker praised the modern disaster management model of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and called it an example for the region. He assured continued US support through technical experts and welfare organisations.
Need for international assistance
The Pakistan government is providing all possible assistance to the flood-affected people, but officials stressed that the country needs international assistance beyond its capabilities. After the United Nations and the United Kingdom, the USA has also sent relief material for the flood victims.
India had destroyed Nur Khan Airbase
The Nur Khan Base was in the news during Operation Sindoor in May. India carried out precision airstrikes on the Nur Khan Air Base under Operation Sindoor, which is a strategic military base located in Chaklala, Rawalpindi. The Indian Air Force destroyed the runway, hangars, and 7,000 square-foot operations complex, as well as damaged two special military vehicles. The Nur Khan base housed critical military equipment such as Saab Arie AWACS, C-130 Hercules aircraft, and IL-78 aerial fuel tankers.
