How the Netherlands treat their heroin addicts. What we think?

  1. It’s been treated the same way in Zürich since the ‘80s. They’d a massive open drug problem in the city centre and a radical public official brought this in. It’s worked incredibly well since then. Absolutely the way to go.

  2. It’s less important what we think, it should be about what science thinks. This is hugely researched and it is very, very clear that it is the way, not just for addicts but also for the community since it cuts down a whole lot of drug related crime.

Hamburg and Frankfurt both established the Dutch model a few decades ago now and the difference it made to the parts of the cities where drug use was prevalent is staggering.

  3. Before America convinced the rest of the world to ban it, heroin was readily available from your local pharmacy and it was actually a pretty upper class drug, mainly medicos etc. They’d just take a bit during the day, no trouble to anyone.

  4. All good in theory but unfortunately politicians would need to be brave and progressive to back this, so it won’t happen.

Let’s not forget that Leo Veradkar, a gay man, was against marriage equality until the polls swung overwhelmingly in favour.

  5. It’s being done in Portugal and Switzerland for years!
Irish are so adverse to actually accepting addiction for what it is and helping people.
There’s such an arrogant attitude that it’s their own fault etc and would rather pass open air dealing and injection than actually try and help the issue. Especially in Dublin

  6. No person using at a safe injection site/ harm reduction facility has died on site which is important to know. (At least the ones in my area – I can’t speak for every country with them)

Harm reduction saves lives and can help get people back on track and into the nose to the grindstone life we have been subjected to.

  7. It’s a brilliant idea and should be replicated across the globe. However, I’ve no doubt that the concept of addiction being solely a medical issue and the treating of addicts as vulnerable human beings in need of our societal support will go down like a shit sandwich on this sub

  8. It would never work here because Ireland has a culture of looking down our noses at those we deem below us, with addicts unfortunately falling into this group.

  9. “Alcoholism is the only disease people get mad you for having.” Trues thing i ever heard about addiction.

  10. I read a book from an anti-social behaviour officer and he makes a great point in it that addicts would much rather stay at home and do their drugs and leave people alone but because it’s expensive and difficult to get they resort to crime to fund their addiction, and that for most he reckons that being able to go to the chemist, get their drug of choice and go home would stop them from ending up resorting to crime, and the drugs would be safer etc.

We don’t have the resources (nor the drive from the people in charge, let’s be honest) to go directly to the route of why addiction happens and why people turn to drugs and help people avoid that life altogether, so we **need** to look at harm reduction if we aren’t going to do that. Any harm reduction steps that makes things safer for addicts and safer for the general public should be embraced.

  11. There are some “injection centres” here, aren’t there? It’s just difficult to put them anywhere because no one wants one near their house. I’d normally be against objecting to things like social housing or amenities but I can kind of understand not wanting an injection centre next door tbh.

  12. Anyone with any sense knows this is a good idea, but we’re so far from responsible drug policy with the amount of corruption with the gardai and inconsistent sentencing in the courts.

  13. I get that, it’s aimed at the never do wells. But there seems to be alot of assumptions here like ‘ they’ve everything handed to them’

The don’t. And you raised an excellent point about the low quality social housing. We live currently in one with my mother. These were suppose to be family homes. It’s one room, you’d think I’d be greatul for a roof over our heads and I am. But it’s psychologically destroying us it’s one room we’ve four adults and two children in one house. Sharing one living space. All on top of eachother, I can see why the local teens are out bored and burning shit down.
Even now as a qualified grown ass woman i get grimaces at job interviews.

I’ve seen alot of teenage boys grow up here with parents I wouldn’t give a rat to. I’ve seen how there spoken to and about. They know what is thought of them so most don’t even try.

There is a fair share of absolute lowlifes who made selfish decisions but the majority? No not really they’re just getting by how they can.
I’m only new to Reddit, but I just got the impression that people weren’t as nasty as Twitter.
