Hii guys. I want to buy this piece of clothing because it’s very pretty. I want to start collecting traditional clothing from different cultures. And I need to ask. Is this actually traditional Austrian clothing? Google isn’t helping much since it shows only one type of traditional clothing. Which I’m sure there are more types.

  1. I think this will go well with a Lederhose. Yes, looks very alpine traditional to me.

  2. Yes, it looks traditional. But I cannot tell you where this is actually from. There are a lot of different flavours of “Tracht” across Austria and Bavaria. Each has distinct features.

  3. Traditional austrian clothing is pretty much every german sterotype you can imagine.
You’d wear this jacket with Lederhosen and some kind of button up shirt (white and red/white checkered is popular)

  4. Problem is, “Tracht” was picked up by rich people at the beginning of the 19th century as a form of nationalistic identity forming in emerging nation states. So aristocrats looked at what rural people wore and mixed and matched to their tastes. After a while, rural people, in imitation of the rich people from the cities, imitated the mixed style as well.

The result is that what belongs where is pretty damn muddled, especially in the Austro-Bavarian region. It’s definitely a vest belonging to the Trachten style, but from where is hard to pin down. Not that it’s all that important, get some Lederhosen and a white shirt with loose-cut sleeves and you’re good to go.

  5. Yesnt.
    “Tracht”? Yes.
Actually authentic/ belonging to a certain region? No, as far as I can tell.
It looks like “landhausmode”, rather cheap generic austrian clothing. If you can tell me whats on the tag i can tell you more.
But most people wont be able to tell it apart. Get a nice linen shirt, some nice Lederhosen, or just some chinos.

  6. It does look like part of our traditional clothing (Tracht) the buttons also seem to have our national flower (Edelweiss) on it.

But as someone else also said, looks rather cheap and like something you can buy from the rack.

  7. Original ones might be made out of deer leather, with undecorated genuine horn buttons. This a cheap imitation off the rack.
