Freshwater layers on the surface of the ocean, caused by melting ice, also act like a cap that makes it more difficult for oxygen to mix into deeper seawater for eventual transport back to North America. The combined effects mean there is less oxygen in deep ocean water when it returns to flow over the continental shelf along the BC coast eight to 10 years later, he said.

In other words, interference in the overturning circulation is slowing upwelling along this part of North America’s West Coast. Could other sections be far behind?
