Max Verstappen saw off the McLaren duo to claim pole position for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, as title contender Lando Norris salvaged a front row start after flirting with a Q2 exit.
Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth but will start 10th due to the yellow flag penalty he incurred at Zandvoort.
Pierre Gasly is taking a new power unit in his Alpine so will start from the pitlane. He had only qualified 19th in any case.
Isack Hadjar – a disappointed 16th on the grid a week after starring at Zandvoort – declared after qualifying that he was due to start last anyway, indicating Racing Bulls planned to fit new components to his car too. But this has yet to be officially logged.
