Construction of the post-apocalyptic ‘shipwreck’ tower was approved by the Prague building authorities this week. Set to rise in Nové Butovice in Prague, Top Tower will dethrone the AZ Tower in Brno as Czechia’s highest building by nine meters.

The skyscraper will see a giant sculpture of a rusty shipwreck colliding with the building. In 2019, the ‘post-apocalyptic’ development was announced with a video highlighting global climate disasters.

The staggering shipwreck sculpture was co-designed by architect Tomáš Císař and renowned sculpturist David Černý whose striking works appear across the neighbourhood and country.

Initially, plans were criticised by some local politicians and residents when Prague 13 signed a memorandum with real estate investors Trigema led by entrepreneur Marcel Soura.

Now, officials have approved an updated plan under an agreement that will see the company pay 75.7 million Czech crowns (∼3.1 mil euro) towards local infrastructure. The money from investors will be split between the city of Prague, who will receive 60.7 million Czech crowns (∼2.5 mil euro), and the Prague 13 town hall, which will receive 15 million Czech crowns (∼0.6 mil euro).

The 135-meter high building will offer apartments, retail, office spaces and a cultural & experience centre. The project will also involve parking lots, an underground pedestrian pass, and public spaces.
