Spain continue their September international duties with a tricky clash against Turkey, as both sides chase precious points in Group E of the World Cup qualifiers.

Spain head into this clash brimming with confidence after dismantling Bulgaria on the road, a match where they carved out six gilt-edged chances inside the first 50 minutes and reminded everyone why they’re tipped to finish top of the group. Luis de la Fuente’s side are still smarting from the heartbreak of a Nations League final defeat to Portugal on penalties over the summer, but when it comes to World Cup qualifying, their record has been close to spotless.

Turkey, on the other hand, arrive with a more uneven story. Their Euro 2024 run had its highs and lows, overcoming Austria in the last 16 before bowing out to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. Still, their Nations League playoff triumph over Hungary hinted at a team beginning to take shape under Vincenzo Montella’s guidance.

Turkiye vs Spain Probable lineups
Injuries and Suspended players

Turkiye team newsThe Crescent-Stars continue to rely heavily on Hakan Calhanoglu to pull the strings, but with veteran Burak Yilmaz calling time on his international career and Enes Unal sidelined long term, their firepower up front isn’t as deep as in previous campaigns.

For Turkey, Vincenzo Montella will be forced into at least one change. Baris Alper Yilmaz saw red within minutes of his introduction in the previous outing and now serves a suspension. At the other end of the pitch, Trabzonspor’s Ugurcan Cakir seems to have locked down the No.1 jersey and should line up in goal once more.

The big talking point, however, is Kerem Akturkoglu. The Fenerbahce forward opened his qualifying campaign in style with a brace away from home and will once again spearhead the Turkish frontline. Alongside him, Real Madrid starlet Arda Guler, who has been a regular starter in La Liga so far, is set to provide the creative spark in attack.

Spain team news

With the games coming thick and fast, Luis de la Fuente may be tempted to shuffle his pack for Sunday’s showdown. After watching on from the bench in midweek, Barcelona pair Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo could be restored to the starting XI as fresh attacking options.

There are still lingering questions over Rodri, who is easing his way back to top shape following a lengthy knee layoff. Even so, the Manchester City linchpin could be thrust straight into midfield to provide stability and control. Between the sticks, Unai Simon looks nailed on to keep his spot, leaving Arsenal’s David Raya likely warming the bench once again.
