US independent director Jim Jarmusch beats Gaza war film to Venice top prize • FRANCE 24 English

An unexpected choice for the Golden Lion, Venice Film Festival’s top prize went to Jim Jarmish’s understated film, Father, Mother, Sister, Brother. The quietly humorous drama starring Adam Driver and Kate Blanchett was a dark horse winner, beating out some of the festival’s bigger hits. An emotional jamish accepted the award. Film making’s a very complicated language and it takes a lot a lot of effort to appear effortless and I had the most amazing cast and collaborators to help me. But the most unforgettable moment was for the runnerup Silver Lion awarded to Franco Chunisian Kher Benhas the voice of Hind Rajab. a gut-wrenching docu drama about a Palestinian girl in the Gaza using real audio from the girl’s final call for help. The film drew tears from many receiving a 22minut standing ovation at its premiere. [Applause] I dedicate this award to the Palestinian Red Crescent and to all those who have risked everything to save lives in Gaza. They are real heroes. Benny Safty for the film The Smashing Machine. Benny Safty took home best director. His film generated serious Oscar buzz with star Dwayne the Rock Johnson who gave a career-defining performance as a fighter struggling with addiction. Other top winners included best actress for Chinese star single in the sun rises on us all and best actor for Italian veteran Tony Seilo. The best screenplay prize went to French film At Work while a special jury prize was awarded to Italian filmmaker Jan Franco Rosie. The ceremony also honored the late fashion icon George Armani, a longtime festival sponsor who passed away just days before the awards.
