I wonder if any of our allies, will still be allies, by the end of Trump’s term.
Close the plant. Put a lock on the door and sign that says “closed, will return 2028. ”
Imagine telling people to build in America, then do this when they are trying to do just that
This would have net them thousands of jobs
This is all Putin wanted. 10/10 everyone
I have mixed feelings about this. I disagree with this administration’s aggressive racist anti-immigrant policies, such as armed men in masks accosting people without cause 😡But in this case was Hyundai breaking the law, and was this proper, if a little heavy handed?
Edit: Can anybody give an explanation rather than just downvoting?
“U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told reporters in London that Trump sent a “powerful” message to investors and their employees.”
Yes, a powerful message, but not the one she thinks.
I dont see how this is wrong and Trump’s fault. It was a clear violation of VISA Policies by doing work while on a VISA which doesnt allow that.
Come assemble your cars in Canada
Please tell us bots how everything US = bad 😂😂😂😂
Americans also feel betrayed by the U.S. We’d understand if our allies felt the need to turn their backs on us for the next 3.5 years, but please don’t give up on us.
Is the message not just being legal workers to the country? Why do people defend those who dont follow the rules?
This was done to slow down Hyundai’s growing EV production (and growing market share)
Tesla was happy to see this raid happen.
welcome to the club, signed Canada
Where where the other 175 employees from?
It’s amazing how these countries get upset over us enforcing our own laws….How about American companies go over to South Korea and just do whatever they want. Maybe they will just use slave labor in their factories or work employees 24×7. How about we pull out all of the money and soldiers defending them from North Korea 24×7? 🤡
How easy is it for me to get a south koren work visa compared to a south korean getting an american visa? If the visa was expired but they kept on working why did the company ignore this?
Koreans were in the country illegally. Full stop. If Ford decides to build a factory in Korea, I’m pretty sure Americans would not be allowed to build or operate it; doing so would be illegal under Korean law. Wherever a company decides to build a facility, they are obligated to use local labor in accordance with all applicable labor laws. Doesn’t matter if qualified workers are hard to find (what a lie), that doesn’t make it okay to break the law. What’s that, legal workers want higher wages? Sorry not sorry.
I’m sorry but if your plant has 425+ people without authorization to work that’s the plant/hyundais problem and this is not normal. Like if they would have done this raid and only a couple people were not documented then we would have said this was an unnecessary disruption to the plant. It is simply unacceptable for any major employer to have this systemic problem of unauthorized employement on their sites even if it was a lot of contractors.
I have very little sympathy for companies that take massive tax breaks to entice them to build a factory there the promise of X jobs. If the US and the state are using tax payer money to subsidize you than you should follow the letter of the law.
DHS indicated that the detained individuals were in the country illegally. Some had entered illegally, some entered on tourist visas that don’t allow work, some had valid work visas that expired. Most worked for subcontractors, not for Hyundai directly. Exactly one detained individual was a green card holder with criminal involvement that led to his detention.
> Some lawmakers even called for the government to retaliate by investigating Americans who are alleged to work illegally in South Korea.
That’s probably a good idea.
I don’t get the outrage. Are we supposed to only deport illegal workers of certain nationalities?
This is why Trump goes bankrupt. He is the worst businessman and has no clue how to treat people with respect
>South Korean companies have been relying on short-term visitor visas or the Electronic System for Travel Authorization to send the workers they need to launch manufacturing facilities or handle other setup tasks.
ESTA cannot be used for **workers**, and definitely should not be used as a wage suppression and tax evasion tool. South Korea has a strict immigration system and does not allow people with visitor visas to work likewise.
My understanding is that a lot of the workers were allegedly on the wrong visa. I’m obviously not in the US immigrations office, but if you notice a company has ~450 people on the wrong visa, *surely* instead of performing 450 arrests for what is clearly an issue with the company’s internal policy and advice, you reach out to the company, tell them they’re in breach and that they have a set period of time (e.g. 3 months) to help their employees get the right visa before action is taken? In an ideal world, you also work with the company to fast-track a fix.
*Surely* you go about this in a way that doesn’t traumatise ~450 individuals and cause a major diplomatic incident for what appears to have been an error of their company rather than them?
This seems like a catastrophic blunder in every sense of the word. These aren’t people plotting and scheming to enter the US illegally, these are people on the wrong end of bureaucracy that need help doing things correctly, and you’ll really sour the working relationship that company has with the US.
Unfortunately, Joe Billy Bob does not have the skills and education to build batteries or the work ethic to show up more than a couple days a week. I would guess that most of the workers picked up were here on work visas. They build these plants in Red States to create jobs, but they find that the education is so lacking in the State that competent workers are hard to find. Also few trained Americans want to move to a Red States. So the companies have to bring in trained foreign workers with visas to do the work. The States need to setup vocational training for workers, so they can learn the skills to be an entry level worker, then these plants would hire them. Unfortunately, Americans do not want to do blue collar work, because it involves manual labor and having to show up on the weekend or at night to work. Foreign workers show up every day rain or shine, why because they have a work ethic.
Ummmm i don’t like Trump as much as the next guy, but how are people not upset that an international corporation illegally sent hundreds of foreign nationals to do work that could’ve used American workers? I’m confused. Things have become so politicized that people are seeing this as bad???
South Korea didn’t pay enough in a grift.
Which countries besides Russia are still talking to us?
Allies? never met one, first time I’m hearing about it.
I’m confused. Did these people not have work visas?
So… Nor Koreans were right: don’t trust the Americans.
I don’t understand why the South Korean workers were detained–weren’t they here on arrangement between our governments and one of the 11 or so temporary work visas foreign workers get to work here in the United States? Many companies use workers with these temporaty visas.
Samsung has a huge vested interested in the build-out of this factory. I wonder what they will do, they also have a few factories being built in Texas, so they have the opportunity to bail and go to Mexico or Canada.
Here’s a thought.
The tRump administration wants to scare foreign owned companies so that they abandon their companies. This then allows the government to seize the assets and then give them to whoever they want.
Why? Because they now would own billions in assets and have a manufacturing plant ready to pump out their own “American made” brand.
The laws and rules no longer apply to this administration and they’re breaking laws with no repercussions.
I mean working on a visitor visa is illigal… why is this a massive news story? I feel like I’m missing something or everyone else is.
It’s worth noting that the US government is deliberately making it harder to renew and retain visas, thereby converting many well-intentioned law-abiding people into “illegal” immigrants.
I told multiple people that they would eventually go for Asians once they are done with Latinos. Didn’t think it would be this quick.
So we are just…. completely killing all of our closest allies?
God… please end this timeline…
China is doing nothing and winning. Again.
Stop going to the US people. This country is sick. Hope people will wake up to this trump scam
South Korean feel betrayed????
US is a capitalist country, and there is no feeling of unity, which is unfortunate.
