This seems like the sensible option. Most of the recommendations from LOA2 with some extra bits taken from LOA3. Taking part in this EU rapid reaction force would be good for our Defence Forces too in terms of expertise.
An extra €1 billion a year would put us closer to New Zealand on defence spending which would make sense as they don’t operate jets either. The Australian Air Force covers them.
They still need to sort out that extra pay grade for skilled technicians though. That’s what is currently catching them big time in terms of losing skilled manpower that keeps the big machinery like ships, planes and APCs/trucks running. That and I do think they need to make the at sea allowance for the navy much higher as it is by the most onerous branch of the Defence Forces in terms of duties when you compare it to the army or Air Corps.
Getting that primary radar will be nice as it’s a bit embarrassing we don’t have that yet considering the Department of Defence actually has a number of options selected since pre Covid.
Aka will probably take them 5 years at best.
Love the way that picture is a British L85…not the rifled we use
Have we run the numbers on whether a billion extra on defence is a better way to spend money than, e.g. a billion extra on early childhood education?
