Canada has dispatched an ice-breaking vessel to rescue a Dutch-flagged freighter that ran aground in the freezing waters of the Northwest Territory while transiting a key Arctic waterway.

The stranded ship, general cargo vessel MV Thamesborg, “unexpectedly ran aground off Prince of Wales Island, Nunavut, Canada,” while transiting the Franklin Strait on Saturday, according to a statement shared Monday with Newsweek by owner Wagenborg, a global maritime logistics firm based in the Netherlands.

The company said that the “modern Ice-class vessel” was traveling “from Asia to Baie Comeau on the East coast of Canada” and “is carrying a cargo of carbon blocks for industrial use.” Maritime trackers reported that the 173-meter-long (568-foot) ship was transiting from Lianyungang, China to Baie-Comeau in Canada’s Quebec province.

  2. Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea

  3. Brings Candian Whiskey to share with our friends 💞🇨🇦

  4. We need to build a three-lane all weather highway (one lane each direction and an alternating passing lane) and at least one major port in the Arctic.
This needs to be done for national security and to ensure Canadian interests in the Arctic are represented and respected.
Ideally we also invest significantly in the facilities at Churchill, Manitoba to act as an eastern anchor.
These capital projects would likely take a decade or two to complete, but would cement Canadian interests in the Arctic for a century to come.

  5. So Canada 🇨🇦 does own that NWP after all! Take notice, my fellow Americans. Even Russia and China say it belongs to 🇨🇦.

  6. I didn’t think the Northwest Passage was being used for random shipments now, crazy.

  7. Just finished watching “High Arctic Haulers” on Netflix. Follows two large freight vessels as they resupply villages in the Canadian Arctic seas. Highly recommend it! Fascinating glimpse into the world up there and the sea lift logistics that help sustain these villages today.
